Anthropologists do not get involved with their subjects. They don't step into their worlds as beyond just sort of being there and observing and questioning. Think of a reporter in the same situation. He would be obliged to protect his sources.
The author of that study was Professor P. Bourgois who is an anthropologist.
How is your response., with this information.
