A man who took off his clothes and beat a dead pigeon on a car outside a home in Suffolk has been sentenced to a year in prison for animal cruelty.
Juan Pablo Lopez of Virginia Beach, who was 30 years old at the time of the incident last July, was sentenced Monday by a Suffolk judge. Lopez pleaded guilty last year to burglary, obstruction of justice and animal cruelty.
He received no time for the burglary and obstruction charges. Police say Lopez broke into the home, destroyed bird cages and freed some chickens and pigeons and killed several of them. The homeowners pulled into their driveway and saw Lopez come running out naked, bashed a dead bird against their car and ran away.
I would never have thought it possible, but it appears that Habibi has outdone both Edgar Blythe and Reyn for most bizarre "human interest" story. I'd never have thought it possible.
For those unfamiliar with the Virginia Peninsula and the Newport News/Norfolk/Virginia Beach/Suffolk area, this represents an incident of degree of strangeness, and in no way should suggest that strangeness is an alien quality in that area.
The New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services issued a warning in January to residents of the city of Ringwood that they should limit their intake of squirrel to no more than twice a week (children once a month). (A toxic waste dump is nearby.) [New York Daily News-AP, 1-25-07]
