Ouch, I got a number that was just a bit more, causing me to round up rather than down! Blah. Razz

Did it with calculus, same as Kutusita. Don't round Pi.

@krazykatana,
I don't think the rounding issue was with pi, but probably in splitting the calculation somewhere and rounding. Still, I think the answer gave out too much info.

If you want a little bit more of a challenge, there was a recent yahoo answers math question that was similiar but asked for the volume of the intersection region of spheres of radius 1.

@DDad,
I got a higher number too! I am going with it... hopefully I am not too late to get the avvie! Smile

Wow, my first attempt at solving it comes out nearly 50% higher than what I'm reading here. I'll bet I made one of my silly mistakes from trying to zip through it too fast. I'll have to go back and take another look. Glad I decided to come look here before submitting my answer.

I didn't see a need to use calculus or the law of cosines. I did use a cosine value to calculate an angle, but even that turns out to be unnecessary if you look at the equilateral triangle.

Found it - my first answer was 1.414 times as big as it should be (square root of 2) because I was using 20,000 for half the intersection of the circles instead of the full intersection. Double the area, the radius goes up by the square root of 2.

@vvktv,
Agreed, but maybe they posted a wrong answer on purpose to throw copiers off.

UM... i READ THAT THE Center of one circle is on the edge of the other. If the darn IT as I am typing this, I realize that I got it wrong... o.O Sad, so sad. Any ways, I was thinking it wrong it said the AREA of the overlap, but i blanked out, and as the radius is half of a half, but not a quarter, i thought that, since half is 20000, then the radius is 20000, but i am wrong.

As pointed out above, I made a rounding error... I've re-done my maths now and am rather disappointed as I was hoping to upgrade my bronze trophy to silver or maybe even gold.
Ohwell, maybe next week.

I got erm.. a three digit number with the same first and third digits. Second number is within five digits over those two numbers. Can anyone confirm?

@xwraith,
I believe the consensus was that Medy was close, but no BubbleBee.

After noon Neopian Time with no e-mails about getting the answer right and the LC is still open. They are skipping it for the US Thanksgiving weekend, it looks like.
