I almost missed it, today is Bastille Day.

Allons enfants de la Patrie
Le jour de gloire est arrivé !
Contre nous de la tyrannie
L'étendard sanglant est levé
Entendez-vous dans nos campagnes
Mugir ces féroces soldats?
Ils viennent jusque dans vos bras.
Égorger vos fils, vos compagnes!

Aux armes citoyens
Formez vos bataillons
Marchons, marchons
Qu'un sang impur
Abreuve nos sillons

Arise children of the fatherland
The day of glory has arrived
Against us tyranny's
Bloody standard is raised
Listen to the sound in the fields
The howling of these fearsome soldiers
They are coming into our midst
To cut the throats of your sons and consorts

To arms citizens Form your battalions
March, march
Let impure blood
Water our furrows

I had debated whether to crash your thread with that news. There has to be an answer to insanity like this, but I haven't a notion at all what might help.

Education in general, will help. And teaching kids science instead of religion will help a lot. It would take a few generations to take hold, but it's really the only way to solve it on a permanent basis.

@rosborne979,
It is so sad that this has happened and on a day which should be a happy day
A day for "liberty, equality, fraternity"
The hate is not just a question of education and religion, but hate towards some who are different and power over others. Often it is also based on politics and wish for more power.
Science does not teach understanding for others, it does not teach empathy and it has nothing to do with getting to know other people.
Scientists also want power - "my knowledge is greater than yours"

According to a Danish paper the man was a looner and not really religious.
These people seem more like looners with no real friends and then they either
on their own like to kill or they contact groups.

podcast from this morning

both interviews have caused me to reflect

http://www.cbc.ca/radio/thecurrent/the-current-for-july-15-2016-1.3680376/attack-in-nice-why-is-france-targeted-1.3680387

Quote:
With the editor in chief of Nice's English language news magazine, The Current discusses the atmosphere on the ground in Nice, then political analyst Loretta Napoleoni explains why France has been targeted 3 times in the last 18 months.

Nancy Heslin is the editor in chief of the Riviera Reporter. She is originally from Toronto but has been living in Nice for 15 years.
Loretta Napoleoni is the author of "The Islamist" and "Terror Incorporated."

@ehBeth,
From another Danish newspaper
France is especially targeted because it is an anti religious state.
This says Jörn Boisen - from Kopenhagens University and who research French history and society.
France is very hard regarding keeping religion our. Very clearly in the schoolsystem, where any form of religious signs have to be removed before the students enter school, he says.
This makes the Muslim feel very subdued or inhibited.

@saab,
Interesting, to me:

(not too long a read, and worth a good look)

@ossobucotemp,
I read about him in another paper, that he drinks wine, eat pork and has a criminal record. He is aggresive.

@saab,
There is similar scorn about Diaby too (the guy who is no longer dead).

I wish Olivier were still here on A2K... I can't email him since my yahoo and gmail are defunct, at least for now. (I need a new device, which I'm saving up for.)

I know a bunch here didn't like him, but he is quite knowledgeable on a lot of these matters.

I agree that this guy was a loner. Neither al Qaeda nor Islamic State rushed to claim responsibility, so i think they were taken by surprise, too.

You can PM him here on a2k. I believe he gets an email notification when he receives a PM. He recently answered a PM that I sent him.
