Way of Saint James: better by feet or by bike?

I would like to go to Santiago de Compostela in October. As I really love cycling I'd like to go there by bike, but many friends of mine told me that it's not a good idea. What do you suggest me?

It certainly depends where you start and which of the various ways you want to take.

Many do it by bike (20%) but the original pilgrimage routes are ... for walking, thus small sandy, unpaved lanes etc
