skype chat with foreigners

Wed 21 Aug, 2013 08:39 am
Hello, Eliza speaking: I want to add some foreigners to be my friend,want to know some culture difference. But when we chat with each other, many Internet friends started the topic with sex,such as naked, horny. It really makes me feel very embarrassed. Could you give me some suggestion when I meet these foreigners?

@Eliza6826,
I do skype chat as part of a language exchange. Our interactions have been pretty straightforward and sex has never come up.

If I were you, I would simply hang up and delete the contact of anyone who makes you uncomfortable. There are lots of people out there, and you may just need to keep trying until you find someone respectable.

@Eliza6826,
Could you please tell me what you mean by the word "foreigner"? I suspect that you may think I am a foreigner, which makes your broad characterization of us a little personal.

@maxdancona,
I am a Chinese, to me, maybe you are a foreigner.To you, maybe I am a foreigner. That is relativity. You know, I learn English and our understanding of western culutre come from countries like United Kingdom, U.S.A or Germany. so maybe I should express like" does Amercian people very open in sex ?" By the way ,thank you very much, you make me realize my misunderstanding~~~~

@Eliza6826,
The question you want to ask is "Are American people very open about sex?"

The answer might surprise you. Many countries, particularly in Europe, see Americans as very closed-minded and repressed about sex. I have friends from Germany and Spain who say that we Americans are far too uptight. I don't know very much about Chinese culture.

As an American, I think it is strange and rude for people who have just met you start talking about sex on Skype. I certainly wouldn't do that. Maybe it is the particular website you are using to meet these people.

Most Americans don't start talking about sex with strangers.

@maxdancona,
You know I really want to share some opinion of Americans from a Chinese eyesight.That would be a lot of fun. haha

Our understanding of Amercian come from Internet, movie and our American teacher, that is very unilateral. so I guess if I share that with you, you would feel very funny.

@Eliza6826,
That would be fun. I would enjoy hearing the stereotypes that Chinese people have of Americans. I am very fortunate that I have friends from different parts of the world. It always interests me to hear how people from different parts of the world have different viewpoints.

I spend a lot of time in Latin America. I find it fun to be a "foreigner". Here I am just another guy. In Latin America I am interesting and even exotic. A while ago, as part of a language exchange, I read an article (in Spanish) by someone from Latin America describing how we Americans viewed the world. I didn't agree with many parts of the article. It is funny to read how other people view you.

I have a few friends who are second or third generation Chinese (meaning their parents or grandparents were born in China). But, people change quickly when they immigrate and I have no real idea about what normal life is actually like in China. We have fictional Characters that are supposed to be Chinese on TV and in movies. I don't believe that they are accurate of real life.

I would be interested in hearing what stereotypes people in China have of Americans .

@maxdancona,
okay, show time:

1.Americans is like a child in soicial activities.Their manner is very casual, also their behaviour is very childish.

2. Amercians are very friendly and kind, it is very easy for them to make friends worldwide.

3. Amercians pay great attention to time, everything they do is basd on schedule.Time is very valuable. pace of life is very quick which makes you love KFC or MacDonald

haha my impression~~~~by the way, actually actors like Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan can not represent our real life in China, few people have kungfu in China.

@Eliza6826,
I don't know what acting "like a child in social activities" means. You will have to give an example of this. Some of the social activities I am part of are formal and would bore a child to tears (I know this because I have a child). Can you tell me an example of what an American acting like a child would be?

I am glad to hear that we are friendly and kind. Actually, I live in Boston in the Northeast of the country. We are known for being rather cold, but other parts of the country are known for being friendlier.

Your KFC and McDonalds comment made me laugh a little. You would not catch me dead in either one of these restaurants. Americans, particularly professionals, are often very obsessed with time.

With my stereotype of Chinese people, I would imagine that people in China would be very punctual.

@maxdancona,
With my idea, Americans are very frank and straightforward in social activities. If they like this person, they will show great hospitality to them.If not, maybe they are very indifferent.

about our punctuality, It all depends, it is very unpolite if you are late in commerce or date. But I gusee if it is a gathering of government officals in a city, mayor must be the latest to arrive.

The impression you gave us is very friendly, I have many Amercian teachers, teaching us English.they are very nice and hospitality. all of them are christians,
every week they will invite us to their home and tell us some stories about Bible.
Maybe Christians are very kind and nice.

@Eliza6826,
I am really curious about your point on social actitivities. Can you explain more about how this is different from Chinese culture? Maybe you could give specific examples of something that is typical in China that you think Americans would do differently.

The idea that "the mayor must be the latest to arrive" is interesting. In the United States we have this idea of equality (this is not absolute, but it a general idea). The idea that Americans should do anything special to show deference to the mayor is a little strange for us.

There are a couple of exceptions. We still stand when a judge enters a courtroom or when a bride enters her wedding. But Americans tend to reisist formal rituals to honor people in positions of authority.

@maxdancona,
China is a socialist country,which is differ from your country. It seems that everyone is equal, but actually class, discrimation are very normal in our country. also the gap between the rich and the poor is very big. I can say that the rich must be the person who is very influential to our government.

As to "The mayor must be the latest to arrive" ,you know why, because he is the most powerful person in a city.

In Chinese culture, we encourage people to hide their negative emotions in social activities, even though someone's world is very rude, which may make you feel uncomfortable. In such a situation, I would like to guess the different attitudes of a Chinese and an Amercian. Chinese people will still be very friendly apparently, but in his inner side, he must be very angry and when this person need her help. The Chinese won't help him. As to the reaction of a American, I have the steropetype that Amercians will point out the persons' rudness straightforwadly.

Hello, Eliza. I am Nube, from Shanghai, China. The phenomen of those strangers talking about sex on the internet is common cause they think there is no regulation on the line, no judement ecept you, and they are safe behind the screens.
Those strange guys talk about sex make me feel gross. I would hand up the phone immediately, and delete the contact.
If you ever wanna learn some Chinese culture, you can add me,skype: icloudle.

@Eliza6826,
I wouldn't have written like that if I had been you, such as telling others that " I want to add some foreigners to be my friend." Why? Because it rules out the possibilities of finding your Chinese fellows here, and worst of all, it partakes of racial overtones. Okay, I'm overstating it. Just kidding.

If I understand correctly, lass, you are seeking out people who are native speakers, and you'd like to pick their brains about how to speak English well whilst gathering some information concerning Western values, say, some social codes and collective norms upheld by Westerners. Huh?

I'm Chinese just like you and my English is naff to boot. That said, I'd love to be your friend because you are one of my Chinese fellows here.
