Ok, this is based on about a 20 second look while walking out to my car this morning.
One of my plants a firebush, seems to have gone completely bare overnight!
OK, the last I remember looking at it was the day before yesterday, but it was fine then.
The firebush is easy to grow, not fussy and was one of my favorites for that reason.
2 days ago, it was healthy and happy looking as can be. No bugs, no discolored leaves....nada.
I'm seriously wondering if someone came up and picked almost ever leaf off it, leaving just the main stem(s) from the ground, and a couple of outshooting branches....I know there had to be more branching from the stem, it was nice and full. Now, it's just some stems growing, and at the very tips of one of the outshoots, 2 or 3 blossoms. What's really puzzling is there are no leave on the ground by the plant, or anywhere else in the flower bed. It hasn't been windy.
That doesn't make sense that someone would do that, since to get to the firebush, you have to come far up my walkway, and pass over a couple of dozen other plants that look equally inviting. But who knows?
Any ideas?
anyone?
Sounds like grasshopper damage.
No, there's nary a grasshopper around.
Wouldn't they have eaten other plants too? There's a few dozen plants in the bed, and this was the only one.
Sounds like Kickycan damage. He found an "area" to shave....
It was just a quick guess, based on time of year and assuming the firebush was fresh out of a greenhouse, making it tender salad for such insects. Wouldn't take many grasshoppers to clean it off and move on.

that or that damn Olson kid from down the street is at it again.
one day he totally pissed all over my neighbors pecan nuts.
oh no....don't use them.
It's just strange it's this ONE plant. I've got sedum, lantana, salvia, sage, periwinkle, heather, phlox and so much more and everything else looks just great.
and no, not just out of the greenhouse, they've been established a couple of months now, growing big.
It's that damn olson kid I tell ya.
I'll fix his wagon....
Deer?
They like to come right up to my house and eat. They have become very brave that way.
Yeah!
According to this, you'd have to go at them with a flame thrower to kill them.
That's it, I'm going to sit on the porch all night with a shotgun. With the light off.
If that olson kid come back to bother my chrysanthimum, he's gonna get an ass full of buckshot.
are the clothespins still there?
google imagesearch. you never know what you'll find.
you got that right ehBeth, red on the head, fire in the hole.
I showed the plant to Mr. Tea when I got home. He said it looked like someone grabbed it from the bottem and ripped upwards, taking of the leaves.
I gotta buy some plants this weekend anyway.
I better go check my list of enemies.
mebbe a thorn bush in the mix?
Insects, or animal piss...
just like female dogs can burn your yard, male dogs can damage SOME roots as well when they pee on them..
I dunno if that applies to your fire bush or not..

I like the way you think.
no shewolfy, this like happened literally overnight. It's in that planter, in the part that like 3 ft above the ground. If a dog jumped up there to piss, good on 'em.
Oh, big news, the driveway and patio concrete was poured today. In the morning I can now park on my property.
I've got some cool ideas for the area in front of the patio, to shield it from the prying publics eyes, but at the same time spy on them.
Not gonna happen overnight though, little by slowly.
