The amounts of apples are three times as much as peaches.

It means:

A = 3P OR
3A = P
(P = peaches, A = apples)

You have 3 times as many apples as peaches under the tree

therefore for every peach you have 3 apples

so p = 3a

or 3a = p

Just substitute 6 for A and 2 for P and see which equation is true.

Look at the statement as an equation applying these definitions

are *verb) means "="

Amounts means "number"

times means "multiplication"

Analyze the statememt using these definitions

numbers of apples = three(3) X the number of peaches

Let "a" be the number of apples and "p" be the number of peaches

so

a = 3 x p

if p is the number of peaches

and a is the number or apples

then p = a/3
