Does your puppy suffer from mouthing problems?

Mouthing is a common problem with new puppies. Does anyone own a puppy that mouths or seems to chew everything that they come across...even your body parts! Would you share your experiences? I am writing a paper on this topic, and need immediate help.

Some other things I would like to know:

1. What was the puppy's age when it was separated from its mother?
2. Have you tried to stop the habit? What methods you have used?
3. Can you tell from the puppy's behavior is the mouthing is aggressive?

Thanks, and if you have anything else to share, you are very welcome!

Thanks, but your dog looks cute!

And also (to posters), I would like to know if you got your puppy from a puppy mill or an animal shelter.

Welcome to A2K, Dogtrainer.

We had one puppy that chewed everything. He was not separated from his mother, since we owned her too. He was very active, high energy and tended to get bored. His mother would try to correct him (bark at him) when she saw him chewing on the leg of the chair or something she knew would get him in trouble. That usually led to him "wrestling" with her instead and biting at her legs.

My son would rough house with him, and he would "bite" but always playfully. I told him not to allow him to do that even playing, since dogs need to know who is boss and not have dominating behavior tolerated.

He eventually out grew the behavior. We tried spraying things we didn't want destroyed with the stinky stuff from the pet store. That didn't work. We tried redirecting him to one of his allowed toys. That didn't work. We crated him at night and when we were gone, which worked... until we got home and let him out.

We had to find him a new home when we moved. God, I miss that pup. Crying or Very sad

Until they're six months old or so, almost all puppies will chew as their permanent teeth come in. If they don't outgrow it by the time they're a year old or more, it is simply a habit that has become a vice.
