I am going NUTS trying to figure this out and would LOVE your help.

Start with the word April. Then follow the directions below to create a
new, common English word. Careful, though! These instructions are
trickier than they look; if you don't end up with a word the first
time, try again.
1. Delete the second
letter
2. Insert an F after the second letter.
3. Swap the third and fourth letters.
4. Double the second letter.
5. Add an S to the end.
6. Delete the first letter.
7.If any letter appears more than once, delete all but the first
occurrence.
8. Insert an O before the second letter from the end.

I have followed the instructions exactly, as far as I can see.
Maybe the puzzle setter's first language is not English? Maybe that's how they think you spell "rifles"? Maybe it's a childish trick question?
I have exactly the same solution as Contrex.
