How many minutes does it take light from the sun to reach Earth? (The distance from the sun to Earth is 93 million mi; the speed of light = 3.00 108 m/s.)

This is your homework?

Haven't you got a calculator? Or a paper and pencil?

The speed of light in a vacuum is 299,792,458 metres per second.

The Sun's distance from Earth varies between

152,097,701,000 metres (max)
147,098,074,000 metres (min)

There are 60 seconds in one minute.

Round and do it in your head

average distance from the sun to the earth is about 1.50E8 km =1.50E11 m
speed of light is about 3E8m/s

d= 1.5E11 (m)/3E8(m/s) = .5E3 (s)=500 sec

To use the figures you were given, you need to convert from miles to meters or the other way around. The conversion factor is 2.54 centimeters per inch, which is actually the current definition of an inch.

Aren't you being a bit mischievous, Brandon? kk22 quoted the distance from the earth to the sun in miles, not inches.

1 mile = 1,609.344 metres

However 1 mile is (12 x 3 x 1760) inches if you want to make life awkward. 63,360 to be exact.

You must have some trash at the top of your head.

The sun is 93 million miles away on average.

Everybody knows a kilometre is about 5/8 of 1 mile, don't they?

So a mile is about 8/5 kilometres. So 93 million miles is about 8/5 times 93 million kilometres. Which is about 150 million kM. Which is 150,000,000,000 metres. 150 billion let's say.

Light goes 300 million metres in a second.

150 billion over 300 million is 500. 500 seconds is about 8 minutes 20 seconds.

Or maybe i meant minutes. Does it really take 8 minutes to get to the earth?(thats SLOW!) oh well i read this **** in elementary
