HDTV: tv station numbers actually change? how come?

i have a hdtv. and this tv won't let me add any channels manually, if it doesn't detect a signal, it won't add that particular channel no matter what.

so i did an auto scan tonight, all of sudden, the usual abc and nbc channel got changed from the signle digital channel number to double digit channel numbers.

and strange thing is that i had no problem receiving those channels in the single digit channels, but now they are all in double digits channels.

this polaroid hdtv won't add those single digit channels now.

why is it doing that? and what is the reason that the hdtv was able to show those same single digit channels before, now it can't?

Before saying anything else, can you post the actual model number of the TV so I can go check a few things?

don't really remember. i don't think that it is too important though. it is bigger than 26. they might have stopped making it.

Well then let me explain things this far:

The "single digit" channels are analog (NTSC) broadcasts. The same channel with the "two digit" channel number is the digital (ATSC) equivilent. Digital broadcasts allow for the splitting of the same bandwidth that a single NTSC channel uses into 4 seperate ATSC channels.

For example, in my area WCBV is broadcasts on Channel 5 on the analog (NTSC) side.

The same local network broadcasts on channel 5.1 on the digital (ATSC) side. They also have Channels 5.2, 5.3 and 5.4 to use for other broadcasts at the same time (they put their weather radar on channel 5.2 24-hrs a day).

So it sounds like when you scanned it only picked up the digital (ATSC)broadcasts.

As for getting your analog channels back, I can't help you there without knowing the model number. I'm afraid I haven't memorized all of the Polaroid Owner's Manuals yet.

how strange.

the tv stations was 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, after i used the auto scan, it is now like 53.1, 53.2, 53.3.

and it won't add the old 4.1, 4.3 back any more. and i was able to watch 4.1, 4.2 4.3 just the minute before i used the auto scan.

Is it possible that channels 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, etc.. were the low-res (480p) broadcasts of the channels and 53.1, etc.. are the HD versions of the channels?

Can you tell me the station call letters?
