If I have a postal address in the United States, is there a way using the Internet or other readily available source, to ascertain if it is a private home, apartment house, etc.?

You could use google earth to see the address from satellite.

I assume it doesn't have an apartment number if you are asking about it being a private home. Depending on where the address is, you might be able to view the tax records online.
