Sorry to hear about the knee Equus, this wasn't our very own Harry Secomb was it?

OR the the little chap who was so adept at chopping the heads off statues in the James Bond film? Oddjob?

Uh oh. A check of H.S.' biography shows that he did, in fact, reside in the USA for two very short periods of his life, although I don't think he ever became a citizen.. I didn't realize that. But he is generally thought of as being European, so I don't think a correction is in order.

Scientist?
He was not trained as a scientist but his major claim to fame would have to be called rather scientific.

That should be a big clue.

Germany?

I have to say he was ethnically German, although there was no country of Germany for most of his life. I believe he was born in Prussia but I may be mistaken. He lived in several non-Germanic European countries also.
