The west side of your house should be a good place for roses.

Rereading this thread. Just noticed I was going on about California live oak, Quercus agrifolia, which is a different tree than Quercus virginiana, which I don't know about.
I finally figured out that Chai's front of house is facing south... don't want to trace back now to how I thought it was facing north.
