Cobalt:

I bought a heavy duty floor fan, HoneyWell, from Staples about 3-4 years ago. Excellent fan, and not real expensive. It has 3 speeds and an excellent cord, so I don't have to worry about fires, at night, when I run it.

Staples takes phone orders and online orders and also delivers.

Growing up in Chicago, I never had air conditioning, till I was well into Graduate School. I still have the old AC, but never use it. Keep it just in case my big one breaks down.

Cobalt-- I was able to wrestle a free A/C from the United Way for an unemployed older guy. You have a son, and this usually perks up charitable orgs. The way I see it--situations like yours --TOO HOT, and not able to afford a cooling system--are why these organizations exist.

Knock on some doors, and ask for the money for an A/C. The major/minor charitable orgs should be listed in the Yellow Pages. NH is right. The heat can be deadly. And your son shouldn't have to suffer like that, either.

I see air conditioners being advertised now for about $200 or less.
If not an AC, get a big window fan and suck the hot air out of the room. Also, keep your head and hair wet with cold water. That'll cool you off.

I don't know the details of Cobalt's financial situ, but I do know sometimes finding $200. of unbudgeted money is as easy as finding 2 million.

That's what's nice about a little credit card. When you need something, use your card and then pay off the charge.

I live way up here in the frozen north for too many months at a time. I know how to handle the cold, but I have to admit that I often dream of much warmer climes. At the moment, it's a balmy 17C/62F and I've had it! It's July for gods sake. If I could, I would change places with you Very Happy!

Till then... dream of cool summer days, I'll suffer my goosebumps silently and dream of heat.
Hope it helps.

I like it HOT! I get stiff and painful in the cold, layers or not. Far as I'm concerned, about 75F is good for indoors, but I really like the hotter weather for play.

One of my pet peeves is people with AC who think the temperature should be in the low 60s when it's over 90 out! Not only do my fingers and toes get cold and stiff (how do you know to take socks and a sweater to someone's house?), but I believe going from very cool to very hot makes one ill.

Wy - you got hot! It's a verra warm day today in Portland. I tend to have to bring an extra sweater or shirt to the grocery store. They're always too cold for me.

Minus 30 is just perfect for me. Snow just floats in the air
and every doorknob is a new sensation.
Simple things become really interesting.

Please send some heat!

It's the middle of winter here - and it's been a tad nippy! The skies have been clear, so the temperature drops a bit at night - down to about 35-40F - that's cold for Sydney. Days have been reasonably pleasant - about 55-65F.

Too cold for my t-shirt and shorts.

I was in Sweden for midsummer last month, and the weather in Sydney was warmer than Swedish summer. But when I get home, it's cold. Bah, humbug!

Margo,
Enclosed find 15F bringing my NYC temp down to 75F and your Sydney temp up to 70F. Sorry biut the humidity is part of the package.

Your avatar cat could be my Roly Poly who is at present stretched belly up in front of the fan. If he took the preference poll most assuredly cold over heat.

Well, tis a sobering moment when you realize that after you buy and put together the SECOND standing fan in 28 hours that it is still not enough...

And the new(er) one was nicer, even, with electric controls and it is called the Silent Storm by Black and Decker. The "old" (1 day old! ) fan is on an end table in front of the AC unit in the living room:

I also bought a little digital camera for $19 tonight and that's how the photos appear so quickly. I wish I could show you the ones I took of my son, but I do realize that he would be embarrassed, soooooo....

Thanks for your ideas and I appreciate you thinking of me and my son. Since he lives in a supported apartment ("group home") in another state and only comes for visits, I can't ask for "help" but if I could, I surely would do that. At present I am unemployed as my temp job ended 3 weeks ago. I have to get a new one as a temp soon and work my little (?) tail off for a month before I likely move to the city my son lives in to provide more care for him than he gets now.

I will be taking him back on Wednesday - just two more days to get through dealing with the heat in prevention for his needs! We've had a great time together this week. Oh yes DON'T go to see the Hulk movie - he loved it, but I think it is a new runner-up to my all time worst movie viewed (runner-up to Kevin Costner's Postman). And did you know that WWE wrestling trading cards come in a pack of 5 for $2? Yipes! Ok, he did talk me into getting them for him, lol!

Sofia, your comment was "right on the money" - er - um - so much for present resources. It was a huge stretch for the two fans. I was alarmed an hour ago when my son woke suddenly with a seizure. Since his body "thermostat" doesn't work well, I wonder that the heat caused it, but there could be a myriad of reasons. He only had the seizure for about 5 minutes and I got him up and then cooled down and then back to bed. I think he'll be sleeping late this morning!

OK everyone, if we all get together and collectively BLOW to the far far far South direction maybe we can redirect this heat to Margo?

Peace, Love and Hugs,
cobalt

Let's try that link as THIS ONE, jeesh! Sorry, apparently that link I got was while I was logged in as administrator on the site and would not work for others...
http://resourcefull.antville.org/

For a strange reason, I see that while I am typing accurately into this text box to post, the double L doesn't show up when I see the URL as I am clicking on the link! Hmmmm. Lessee- type http:// and then type resourcefull and then the . and then antville and then .org

Better? I hope so! Isn't that an odd thing that I clearly see the double L in the text box, and the double L in antville, but it just doesn't show up the right way when I've submitted the post. Hmmmmmm, doya think it's a gremlin? Or an omen? Gasp!

Oh heavens! I still can't make the word resourcefull show up with two L's anywhere! Really, there is no spell check operating and I have no idea why the problem. I coined this word as resource.full in about 1977 to name a book I wrote as a directory to regional artists and craftsmen. The whole idea was resource + full... Today I use it in the name of my private business as a tutor and learning mentor. I guess you will have to manually type it in with two L's to get to the images....sorry!

Cobalt,
With two l's worked. One suggestion re fans. Have gotten excellent results for years and years with Vornado air circulators, better airstream than fans, quiet, and very long lasting. My Grandmother had a Vornado in the 1950's that was built like a Buick, back when cars were metal. That fan lasted into the 1980's.

Thanks! I had to go take a look online to see about this fan and the products offered. Here is a link to an Amazon store with several models and reviews that describe what you tell about! Maybe NEXT month I'll add that fifth fan/circulator, ha ha!

Well life takes a turn for old lady cobalt here just when she's bragging about finally just enough fans to make it bearable.

My son woke at 4:30 am with a seizure and then he went into another stronger one at 11 am. It could be anything that triggered them, but I do feel quite badly that maybe it was really not quite cool enough in his room after all. Talked to his specialists in Iowa and they've advised me to take him straight to ER is he gets another within this day. I did get the gumption up to call the apartment management and demand they get out to check on the freon of the wimpy window AC. Still waiting, but I'll call again in an hour or so and keep calling until we can at least eliminate that problem better for the present.
