Just done this puzzle, am behind at the moment. I also have an incomplete word but think the answer is palatial. I think the shaded square should be to the left of the one that IS shaded.
Let's see what others come up with.

I will be putting in palatial as I think that is correct but just to cover yourself you could also put the answer you got in brackets perhaps, I might do that as well.

Dear Mrs Green,

I have still been working on this one! I see you have had a few ideas. I am going another way and coming up with palative: pleasing to the taste.
That is with scheme down and evade across. a is the letter they have marked, but should it be the "v" I know palative is not in every dictionary so palatial maybe more likely!

Hi all you ladies

No ifs or buts, 'palatial' is the word, however it is obvious a gremlin got into the works hence we all come up with 'PALATIAE' and that is the word to submit. Lovatts will acknowledge their mistake in due course, I'm sure.

By the way mrsgreen I don't think Lovatts award "Spot the Gremlin" fridge magnets for the 'Big crosswords", I think that award only applies to the "Colossus magazine".

Well, wasn't that one sent to test the patience of us all. ;-)

The other half does that one for me plus the starhunts. None of those I really enjoy doing.

Like what others here found everything fitted but the final word made no sense.

BIG Do Your Block
I just came across this while doing Lovatts Big. I rang Lovatts about the Do Your Block and they apologise and say they will accept both palatiae and palatial. I guess they are only human - good to know they are not all compuers!
