- A room is 24 feet long, 18 feet wide, and 9 feet high. How many square yards of wallpaper are needed to paper the four walls of the room?

Think of it like this:

Two walls are 18 feet by 9 feet (How many square feet is that? hint: 2x18x9)

The other two walls are 24 feet by 9 feet (how many square feet is that? hint: 2x24x9)

Add the two totals together and you get the total number of square feet to be covered (but we haven't calculated doors and windows...

It is easier to do the math if you convert feet to yards before multiplying. Isn't it fortunate that all of the dimensions are multiples of 3, with no odd inches left over?

The amount needed also depends on the pattern, unless it is random match. An 18 inch repeat can waste a lot of paper. You also have to allow for an overlap in each corner, cutting each piece an inch or two longer to allow for trimming (walls and ceilings are rarely perfectly straight), ruining a piece by miscutting it, flaws, and it's nice to have some extra to have on hand for future repairs. But your math teacher probably doesn't care about any of that. Smile
