It is easier to do the math if you convert feet to yards before multiplying. Isn't it fortunate that all of the dimensions are multiples of 3, with no odd inches left over?
The amount needed also depends on the pattern, unless it is random match. An 18 inch repeat can waste a lot of paper. You also have to allow for an overlap in each corner, cutting each piece an inch or two longer to allow for trimming (walls and ceilings are rarely perfectly straight), ruining a piece by miscutting it, flaws, and it's nice to have some extra to have on hand for future repairs. But your math teacher probably doesn't care about any of that.
