Aside from the fact that they used salt, it sounds like you had one of those lovely home cooked meals like Mother used to burn...I mean cook. Yes, that's what I meant. Followed the directions to the letter but never bothered with salt; however, there was always a pleasing charcoal grit stuck to the teeth after choking down her meals...think of it as a way to enjoy the meal hours later, and charcoal cuts down on intestinal gas.
You should also be thrilled someone made sure any bacteria were killed off in the cooking process...that's a sign of true caring in cooking.
