Not to interrupt about salts, but will any of you clue me in on antifreeze?

Antifreeze is mixed with water to create the coolant in the radiator. It lowers the freezing point of the mixture, so that freezing water doesn't burst a hose or crack the engine block.

Probably not a worry, unless you've had to add a bunch of water to your radiator and have diluted the mixture.

It was "invented" more than 75 years ago in the country of the inventors of the automoble, here by BASF, and is called Glysantin®

i used kitty litter the day I fell down the stairs

it only served to make a mess.

I think it works best when your tires are stuck to help give them traction..
but nothing more

unless i didnt use enough?

It has been lightly raining for about five straight hours. The temp went up from 28 to 29. I saw several fluffy snowflakes just moments ago.

In Austin's defense...most cities in the South have little or no snow removal equipment. The people who live there have little or no experience driving on snow or ice. Nobody owns a snow shovel.

When we lived in Cleveland, Ohio, they had 77 inches of snow that winter. But we never once had to drive on it. The streets were cleared by 8 a.m. every morning. Here in Tulsa, they only have enough equipment and salt/sand mixture to clear major streets and intersections. Getting to those streets, though, you're on your own. With 4" of ice on these hills, a lot of people can't get out of their neighborhoods. The stores don't begin to stock enough de-icer because this hardly ever happens.

You don't live in Boston - often the snow removal s*cks - just not enough room to dump all that snow with our small narrow streets.

Another surprise, when it would be all icy during the day, I'd go out with my scrapper to uncover my car after work, just like I'd done all my life. In the parking lot there'd be all these people who were BORN there for crying out loud, trying to scrape their cars with the edge of a credit card or their drivers license.

That's me! I always forget to put the scraper back in the car for the first icing or snow fall or I need a new one from last year. And there I am trying to get snow or ice off the car with a credit card or whatever else I can find.

The Tomball/Houston area is out of it now, except we got drizzling rain and just barely into the forties, temp wise. I pity those of you further north.

Good news - I do have antifreeze in my car. Whew! (I didn't have to have it where I lived in California.)

50% chance of snow here tomorrow.

Keep antifreeze away from kids and animals. It's poisonous, but tastes sweet.

drewdads right.

animals will lick it up, and it results in a horrible death (my neighbors poor cat, I still get upset when I think of it, sweet kitty)

keep it tightly sealed and well away from little hands and paws.

radiator.

It's good to get your radiator flushed every couple of years too.

If the core rots, you'd have to replace the whole thing.

Four years ago, I bought two pairs of shoe cleat slipons; one for my car and one for at home. Its the only way I can safely walk outside in this weather.
