Having loaded my 40 gig ipod nearly to the gills with tunes, the recent holidays have caused me to load scores of traditional Christmas songs, from the Mormon Tabernacle Choir singing "Little Drummer Boy" to Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" to both Mel Torme and Nat King Cole's versions of "The Christmas Song," even Alvin and the Chipmunks' and "Snoopy versus the Red Baron" are on the playlist.
But, I noted only a few recent Christmas songs I loaded, and of these only a few stand out. First, is "I Believe in Father Christmas" by Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, followed closely by John Lennon's "Christmas, War No More" and the haunting "Christmas in the Trenches" covered by both John McCutcheon and John McDermott. (The Kinks "Father Christmas" also shows up!)
Can anyone recommend more recent Christmas songs and not simply modern covers of old songs?
Several years ago, I helped Jespah with a holiday music lyrics project for the Portal. Check out the music->lyrics link and then click on some of the artists names. I tried to include at least one holiday song for each artist.
The project has grown quite a bit since I last worked on it so you may find more than just holiday music there now.
Here's a direct link in case you got lost in the directions above:

Yep, and thank you again.
Hmmm a few off the top of my head ...
"Feed the World" - USA for Africa
"Father Christmas, Give us some Money" - The Kinks
"River" - Joni Mitchell (but it's getting covered to death, unfortunately)
Here ya go, Kuvasz, sing this song to the tune of Winter Wonderland, and you should be able to find it online:
Walkin' 'Round in Women's Underwear
Lacy things, the wife is missin'
Didn't ask, her permission
I'm wearin' her clothes
Her silk pantyhose
Walkin' 'round in women's underwear
In the store, there's a teddy
Little straps, like spaghetti
It holds me so tight
Like handcuffs at night
Walkin' 'round in women's underwear
In the office there's a guy named Melvin,
He pretends that I am Murphy Brown
He'll say, "Are you ready?" I'll say, "Whoa Man!"
"Let's wait until our wives are out of town!"
Later on, if you wanna
We can dress, like Madonna
Put on some eyeshade
And join the parade
Walkin' 'round in women's underwear
Lacy things- missin'
Didn't ask- permission
Wearin' her clothes
Her silk pantyhose
Walkin' 'round in women's underwear
Walkin' 'round in women's underwear
Walkin' 'round in women's underwear
Thanks guys! To the download machine I go!
and Set, yours is a tradition at the kuvasz ranch while preparing myself for Rocky Horror and the ever so finely garmetted Dr Frankenfurter.
I personally like Renaissance music for Christmas. I also likeEarly Music. I favor French dances and English lute music.
There was a couple of tapes once called A NEw England Christmas and ANEC II done by some fabulous people like Jay Unger. A local guy named Terry Kitchen wrote a song called, "Christmas is Homeless THis YEar," that is meaningful.
Chestnuts roasting on an open fire;
Jack Frost nippin' at yer nose ...
They know Setanta's on his way ...
not sure where to find it but this tune is really quite good
a little christmas rap
Christmas in Hollis
Run-D.M.C.
[Run]
It was December 24th on Hollis Ave in the dark
When I see a man chilling with his dog in the park
I approached very slowly with my heart full of fear
Looked at his dog, oh my God, an ill reindeer
But then I was illin because the man had a beard
And a bag full of goodies, 12 o'clock had neared
So I turned my head a second and the man had gone
But he left and dropped his wallet smack dead on the lawn
I picket the wallet up then I took a pause
Took out the license and it cold said "Santa Claus"
A million dollars in it, cold hundreds of G's
Enough to buy a boat and matching car with ease
But I'd never steal from Santa, cause that ain't right
So I'm going home to mail it back to him that night
But when I got home I bugged, cause under the tree
Was a letter from Santa and all the dough was for me
[D.M.C.]
It's Christmas time in Hollis Queens
Mom's cooking chicken and collard greens
Rice and stuffing, macaroni and cheese
And Santa put gifts under Christmas trees
Decorate the house with lights at night
Snow's on the ground, snow white so bright
In the fireplace is the yule log
Beneath the mistle toe as we drink egg nog
The rhymes you hear are the rhymes of Darryl's
But each and every year we bust Chrsitmas carrols
(Christmas melodies)
[Run-D.M.C.]
Rhymes so loud and prod you hear it
It's Christmas time and we got the spirit
Jack Frost chillin, the hawk is out
And that's what Christmas is all about
The time is now, the place is here
And the whole wide world is filled with cheer
[D.M.C.]
My name's D.M.C. with the mic in my hand
And I'm chilling and coolin just like a snowman
So open your eyes, lend us an ear
We want to say Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
<gasp>
I am SHOCKED and APPALLED!
And well you should be, ehBeth. What's the world coming to?!!
