In touch with the ground
I'm on the hunt I'm after you
Smell like I sound, I'm lost in a crowd
And I'm hungry like the wolf
Straddle the line, in discord and rhyme
I'm on the hunt I'm after you
Mouth is alive with juices like wine
And I'm hungry like the wolf

Not long ago you held our baby's bottle
But the one you're holding now's a different kind
You just sit and wait to be somebody's baby
And it all depends on who will buy the wine
Whoever sets them up and tips the waitress
Will be the one to share the love that's mine
You'd never know whose lips you'll soon be kissing
For it all depends on who will buy the wine

The kind of life you're living since you left me
I'm sure it's not the life you thought you chosed
That honky tonkin' world is not so flashy
Bright lights and booze is all it really knows
Whoever sets them up...

There wasn't anyone around, except this old man and me.
The guy who ran the bar was watching Ironside on TV.
Uninvited, he sat down and opened up his mind
On old dogs and children and watermelon wine.

"Old Man"

Old man look at my life,
I'm a lot like you were.
Old man look at my life,
I'm a lot like you were.

Old man look at my life,
Twenty four
and there's so much more
Live alone in a paradise
That makes me think of two.

Love lost, such a cost,
Give me things
that don't get lost.
Like a coin that won't get tossed
Rolling home to you.

Queueing with the old folk
There's and old man with a wicked smile
Not through smug politeness
He's doing it in style
No savings book or flannel slacks
No "Pardon" when I heard them ask
Just a vodaphone and a filofax
When I'm 64
I'll dream on
They all bore the milkman
Stop him for hours at their front gate
He just sists and thinks
I'll make the bastard wait
No dribbling or incontinence
No longing for the old sixpence
Just smoking weed till age makes sense
When I'm 74

Whenever I want you,
All I have to do, is
Dream, dream.
I can make you mine,
Taste your lips of wine,
Any time, night or day.
Only trouble is, gee whiz,
I'm dreamin' my life away.
I need you so that I could die,
I love you so, and that is why,
Whenever I want you,
All I have to do, is
Dream, dream.
I can make you mine,
Taste your lips of wine,
Any time, night or day.
Only trouble is, gee whiz,
I'm dreamin' my life away.

As long as the planets are turning,
As long as the stars are burning
As long as your dreams are coming true,
You better believe it

That I would do anything for love,
And I'll be there til the final act
I would do anything for love,
And I'll take a vow and seal a pact

As I went out one evening to take the evening air
I was blessed by a blood-red moon
In Lincoln Park the dark was turning
I spied a fair young maiden and a flame was in her eyes
And on her face lay the steel blue skies
Of Lincoln Park, the dark was turning
Turning

They spread their sheets upon the ground just like a wandering tribe
And the wise men walked in their Robespierre robes
Through Lincoln Park the dark was turning
The towers trapped and trembling, and the boats were tossed about
When the fog rolled in and the gas rolled out
From Lincoln Park the dark was turning
Turning

I've seen love go by my door
It's never been this close before
Never been so easy or so slow.
Been shooting in the dark too long
When somethin's not right it's wrong
Yer gonna make me lonesome when you go.

Dragon clouds so high above
I've only known careless love,
It's always hit me from below.
This time around it's more correct
Right on target, so direct,
Yer gonna make me lonesome when you go.

Go away from my window
Go away from my door
Go away way from my bedside
And bother me no more
And bother me no more

I'll give you back your presents
You give me back my ring
And I won't forget my own true love
As long as song birds sing
As long as song birds sing

I'll tell all of my brothers
I'll tell my shipmates too
The reason that my heart is broke
Is all because of you
Is all because of you

I'll tell my ma when I go home
The boys won't leave the girls alone
They pulled my hair and they stole my comb
But that's all right till I go home.
She is handsome, she is pretty
She is the bell of Belfast city
She is counting one, two, three
Please won't you tell me who is she.

Well, that's all right, mama
That's all right for you
That's all right mama, just anyway you do
Well, that's all right, that's all right.
That's all right now mama, anyway you do

Mama she done told me,
Papa done told me too
'Son, that gal your foolin' with,
She ain't no good for you'
But, that's all right, that's all right.
That's all right now mama, anyway you do

I'm leaving town, baby
I'm leaving town for sure
Well, then you won't be bothered with
Me hanging 'round your door
Well, that's all right, that's all right.
That's all right now mama, anyway you do

Want some whiskey in your water?
Sugar in your tea?
What's all these crazy questions they're askin' me?
This is the craziest party that could ever be
Don't turn on the lights 'cause I don't wanna see
Mama told me not to come
Mama told me not to come
She said that ain't the way to have fun, son
That ain't the way to have fun, son

Open up the window, let some air into this room
I think momma's chocking from the smell of stale perfume
And the cigarette you're smoking about to scare me half to death
Open up the window, let me catch my breath

Some radio is blastin'
Someone's knockin' at the door
I'm lookin' at my girlfriend
She just passed out on the floor
I've seen so many things
I ain't never seen before
Don't know what it is
I don't wanna see no more

Perhaps it's the color of the sun cut flat
An' cov'rin' the crossroads I'm standing at,
Or maybe it's the weather or something like that,
But mama, you been on my mind.

I don't mean trouble, please don't put me down or get upset,
I am not pleadin' or sayin', "I can't forget."
I do not walk the floor bowed down an' bent, but yet,
Mama, you been on my mind.

Even though my mind is hazy an' my thoughts they might be narrow,
Where you been don't bother me nor bring me down in sorrow.
It don't even matter to me where you're wakin' up tomorrow,
But mama, you're just on my mind.

I am not askin' you to say words like "yes" or "no,"
Please understand me, I got no place for you t' go.
I'm just breathin' to myself, pretendin' not that I don't know,
Mama, you been on my mind.

When you wake up in the mornin', baby, look inside your mirror.
You know I won't be next to you, you know I won't be near.
I'd just be curious to know if you can see yourself as clear
As someone who has had you on his mind.

Haven't got a lot to learn
And my eyes, they stray again
Looking for a satellite
In the rays of heaven again
There's no other ending o Sunday sun
Yesterdays are ending, o Sunday sun
Ohhhhhh ohhhhhh

Jealous minds walk in a line
And their faces jade the strain
Stranded in infinity rooms
And they're safe from any harm
There's no other ending o Sunday sun
Yesterdays are ending o, Sunday sun
Ohhhhhh ohhhhhh

Yesterday, when I was young,
The taste of life was sweet as rain upon my tongue,
I teased at life as if it were a foolish game,
The way the evening breeze may tease a candle flame

The thousand dreams I dreamed, the splendid things I planned,
I always built, alas, on weak and shifting sand,
I lived by night and shunned the naked light of day,
And only now I see how the years ran away

Yesterday, when I was young,
So many happy songs were waiting to be sung,
So many wild pleasures lay in store for me,
And so much pain my dazzled eyes refused to see

I ran so fast that time and youth at last ran out,
I never stopped to think what life was all about,
And every conversation I can now recall,
Concerned itself with me, and nothing else at all

Yesterday, the moon was blue,
And every crazy day brought something new to do,
I used my magic age as if it were a wand,
And never saw the worst and emptiness beyond

The game of love I played with arrogance and pride,
And every flame I lit too quickly, quickly died,
The friends I made all seemed somehow to drift away,
And only I am left on stage to end the play

There are so many songs in me that won't be sung,
I feel the bitter taste of tears upon my tongue,
The time has come for me to pay,
For yesterday, when I was young

Now the reddest red I've always said
Is the sunset coming down
Soon the blackest night that kills the light
Is the only thing around
And the downest down I ever been
Is when I knew my race was run
And the greatest song I ever heard
Was the one we never sung

There is a house in new orleans
Call it the rising sun
And it's been the ruin
Of many a poor girl
And me, oh lord, I'm one

If I'd listened what my mama said
Be at home today
Bein' so young
And foolish, my lord
Let a gambler lead me astray

My mother was a tailor
Sews new blue jeans
My sweetheart's is a drunkarad, lord
Drinks down in new orleans

Go tell my baby sister
Never do what I have done
Shun that house in new orleans
They call it the rising sun

Goin' back to new orleans
Race is almost run
Goin' back to spend my life
Beneath, beneath, beneath, oh lord
Beneath, oh now
Beneath the rising, rising sun
Now, now
- Nina Simone version

Where will you go when this day is over?
A gambler's purse lays on the road straight to your door
The snakes have gone crazy tonight
Winding their way out of sight

A laugh, a joke, a sentiment wasted
Seasons of strangers that come and go
Doldrums are pounding, cheapskates are clowning this town
Who could disown themselves now?

Engineer, slow down this old train
Cinders and chaff laugh at the moon
Night birds will cackle, rotting like apples on trees
Sending their dead melodies to me

I warned her of the dangers --
Don't speak to strangers.
If by chance she finds new romance,
Warmer lips to kiss her,
Arms to hold her tighter,
Stirring new fires inside her --
How I wish that it was me, instead of he
That stands beside her.

Engine, engine number nine,
Comin' down the railroad line,
I know she got on in Baltimore.
A hundred and ten miles ain't much distance,
But it sure do make a difference --
I don't think she loves me anymore.
