would pick and we would sing to the rhythm of that front porch swing
The moonlight holds the spotlight that we shared
I found new notes on that old guitar, she believed I could be a star
She told me that she wanted to be fair
She said, I love you more than to hold you down, boy you're glory bound
We can't share a world with different dreams
So I chased mine and she found hers too, but someone else made hers come true
Now I'm a star, but every time I sing
My heart goes drifting down a dusty dixie road
Taking my mind, back in time
L.A. lights burn like hell once you know
You left heaven waitin' down the dixie road.
Every night I'm in a different place and I'm searching every stranger's face
Trying to find the girl that's just not there
She's back there in Montegomery and I'm clear across the country
But whenever I'm alone I go back there.
My heart goes drifting down a dusty dixie road
Taking my mind, back in time
L.A. lights burn like hell once you know
You left heaven waitin' down the dixie road.

Dixie Road-Lee Greenwood
I was looking for Rhythm of the Road by Michael Martin Murphy..but I'm too lazy to go dig up my Swans Against the Sun Lp ...it's gathering dust in the bassement ;0)
Nibbling on sponge cake, watching the sun bake,
All of those tourists covered with oil,
Strumming my six string, on my front porch swing,
Smell those shrimp, they're beginning to boil.
Wastin away again in Margaritaville,
Searching for my lost shaker of salt,
Some people claim that there's a woman to blame,
But I know it's nobody's fault.
-- Margaritaville, Jimmy Buffet
You will always find me singing
I never thought it could happen to me
I didn't think it was true
That I could be just like anyone else
I'll take my chance with you...
Let's have a drink
It's Magrarita time
It's Margarita time after nine
Anytime...
Magrarita time - Status Quo.
Now he lives in the islands, fishes the pilin's
And drinks his green label each day
He's writing his memoirs and losing his hearing
But he don't care what most people say.
Through eighty-six years of perpetual motion
If he likes you he'll smile then he'll say
Jimmy, some of it's magic, some of it's tragic
But I had a good life all the way.

The Paris Match
Empty hours spent roaming the streets
In daytime hours these become my beat
As I walk from cafe to bar
Wish I knew where you are
Because you've clouded my mind
And now I'm all out of time
Empty hours say try to forget
Better advice is to have no regrets
As I tread the boulevard floor
Can I see you once more
The gift you gave is desire
The match that started my fire...

One night in Paris
1st voice: Bonjour, Monsieur, Paris really welcomes you
It's the place to wonder how...
It's 30 Francs a night
Allright?
2nd voice: You're crazy...
It isn't worth a Centime!
I'll take it!
1st voice: Merci Monsieur.
Chorus: Rouged lips in the gaslight
A great view of the hall
That's the way the Croissant crumbles after all...
Prostitute: Oh my Cheri
Wish you were mine
And I'll show you a wonderful time
For the price of a cheap champagne
I'll show it you once again
Chorus: Notre Dame is ringing her bells
Notre Dame has gone to hell
to hell to hell
One night in Paris is like a year in any other place
One night in Paris will wipe the smile off your pretty face
One girl in Paris is like loving every woman
Each night in Paris may be your last.

Bangkok, Oriental setting
And the city don't know that the city is getting
The creme de la creme of the chess world in a
Show with everything but Yul Brynner
Time flies -- doesn't seem a minute
Since the Tirolean spa had the chess boys in it
All change -- don't you know that when you
Play at this level there's no ordinary venue
It's Iceland -- or the Philippines -- or Hastings -- or --
or this place!
One night in Bangkok and the world's your oyster
The bars are temples but the pearls ain't free
You'll find a god in every golden cloister
And if you're lucky then the god's a she
I can feel an angel sliding up to me.
-- One Night In Bangkok, Frankie Goes To Hollywood
This night has opened my eyes
In a river the colour of lead
Immerse the baby's head
Wrap her up in the News of the World
Dump her on a doorstep...girl
This night has opened my eyes
and i will never sleep again
You kicked and screamed like a bullied child
A grown man of 25
Oh he said he'd cure your ills
But he didn't and he never will
Oh please save your life
Because you've only got one
A shoeless child on a swing
Reminds you of your own again
She took away your troubles
But in its place she left pain...

I'll always love my mama,
You only get one...You only get one,
Mama never had a flower garden cause cotton grew right up to our front door
Daddy never went on a vacation he died a tired old man at forty-four
Our neighbors in the big house called us redneck
Cause we lived in a poor sharecropper shack
The Jackson's down the road were poor like we were
But our skin was white and their was black
But I believe the south is gonna rise again
But not the way we thought it would back then
I mean everybody hand in hand I believe the south is gonna rise again
I see wooded parks and big skyscarpers where dirty rundown shack stood once before
I see sons and daughter and sharecroppers but they're not pickin' cotton anymore
But more important I see human kindness as we forget the bad and keep the good
A brand new breeze is blowing cross the southland
And I see a brand new kind of brotherhood
Yes I believe the south is gonna...
I believe the south is gonna rise again I believe the south is gonna rise again
I Believe the South is Gonna Rise Again-Tanya Tucker
Maybe so, but that's not the way this song intended things to be..I wish I could remember who wrote the song-seems like Billy Sherrill, but I could be wrong. It was a strong statement against racism for the mid 70's.
Let me relate a strange phenomenoa to you Vickie G,
....In the late 60's and early 70's I traveled extensively in the south,, as an entertainer. Of course there was still evidence of racism, but generally we stayed in the Black community. We entertained in mixed venues ,but mostly our contact with Whites was purely professional.
....About eight years ago my wife and I traveled to Norht Carolina for a birthday party. fora former producer. Now......starting with rest stops and throughout our trip, we would wind up in friendly conversations with Whites, of all ages!
I could not believe it! And it all seems so genuine. Living in New York City, I'm pretty good at judging the phonies and the fuh real people, but all these people seemed like the real deal.
Booman, I 'm so glad things have changed so much since the 60's and 70's -even in the South..I traveled a bit through the south in the 70's with my mom, visiting relatives, and saw that progress was needed indeed. I see there's still much room for improvement, here in KS as well as all over. I have a cousin in Georgia and whenever she comes here, we get into a big debate over this issue. She's of my mom's generation, and will go to her grave believing that whites are superior to everyone else. We've tried to raise our kids to know that's just a farce and that sinners and saints come in all shades.I think theyr'e getting it, my mil likes to make comments(my niece has 5+ bi-racial children) and the kids will get right in her face about her attitude. It helps that in our little town, many families have adopted biracial kids, and a few have gone to our church(we homeschool-so no contact at school) and they've come to feel very protective of those kids..
Anyway, to keep this post slightly on topic.. I do believe that music and the entertainment media have played an important role is helping lots of us see a person first, and then go, "oh, I guess they're this color or that."
And don't even get me started on Christians who try to use the Bible to back their racism..Not all do and there are some of us who can use the Bible to show that we're all the same!
Here's some lyrics so I don't get tossed in the corner:
The ink is black, the page is white
Together we learn to read and write
A child is black, a child is white
The whole world looks upon the sight, a beautiful sight
And now a child can understand
That this is the law of all the land, all the land
The world is black, the world is white
It turns by day and then by night
A child is black, a child is white
Together they grow to see the light, to see the light
And now at last we plainly see
We'll have a dance of Liberty, Liberty!
The world is black, the world is white
It turns by day and then by night
A child is black, a child is white
The whole world looks upon the sight, a beautiful sight
The world is black, the world is white
It turns by day and then by night
A child is black, a child is white
Together they grow to see the light, to see the light
The world is black, the world is white
It turns by day and then by night
A child is black, a child is white
The whole world looks upon the sight, a beautiful sight
The world is black, the world is white
It turns by day and then by night
A child is black, a child is white
Together they grow to see the light, to see the light
C'mon, get it, get it
Ohh-ohhhh, yeah, yeah
Keep it up now, around the world
Little boys and little girls
Yeah, yeah-eah, oh-ohhh

Here's a story you might like Vicki,
....My revue was touring the South in '69; My partner and I were doing a comedy act, that made fun of Mississippi's racism. As it happened, two of the very few mixed audiences we had were, ironically in Miss., and the next night in Alabama. So in Miss. We changed the state to Ala., then the next night we changed back to Miss. In both cases, the Whites laughed at least as hard as the Blacks. Go figure.
They were probably glad to see you guys pickin on the idjits across the state line instead of THEM! Remember country comedy duo from the the 80's, Williams and Ree? The Indian and the White guy? Most of their act was poking fun at White/Indian relations.."Here Indian, I give you this guitar, you give me all your land..Oh, wait, I guess that's kinda how it was done.." You know they played lots of white majority venues, and they were sure on Ralph Emery's tv show on TNN a lot. Comedy done well can cross boundaries that seem insurmountable..
That's a group I missed. I'll be on the lookout for them.

Pardon me, your epidermis is showing, sir
I couldn't help but note your shade of melanin
I tip my hat to the colorful arrangement
Cause I see the beauty in the tones of our skin
We've gotta come together
And thank the Maker of us all
(chorus)
We're colored people, and we live in a tainted place
We're colored people, and they call us the human race
We've got a history so full of mistakes
And we are colored people who depend on a Holy Grace

Love of the common people
Living on free food tickets
Ordering the milk from a hole in the roof
Where the rain came through
What can you do
Trying to keep your hands warm
When the hole in your shoe
Let's the snow come through
And chills you to the bone
You better go home
Where it's warm
And you can live in the love of the common people
Smile from the heart of a family man
Daddy's gonna buy you a dream to cling to
Mamma's gonna love you just as much as she can
And she can
Love of the common people by Nicki Thomas from the 60's, I think
True love will never die, so I've been told, but now I must cry
It's finally goodbye, I know
With music softly playing, his lips were gently saying : "I love you"
He held me in desperation, I thought it was a revelation
And then he walked out
How could I be so blind, to give up love for the very first time
To be fooled is a hurting pain, to be loved and fooled
Is a crying shame, while I bear the blame as he laughs my name
With music softly playing, his lips were gently saying: "Honey, I love you."
He held me in desperation, I thought it was a revelation,
And then he walked out
I found love on a two-way street and lost it on a lonely highway
