What impresses me is the ability of humans to come up with solutions when they are needed in a hurry.

Clean green hydrogen-making machine created.

3 November 2006

An efficient, super-fast new method of turning waste biomass into hydrogen has been developed by scientists in Minnesota, US. The researchers say it could help significantly reduce many nations' dependence on fossil fuels.
.
Hydrogen represents a cleaner alternative to fossil fuels but is both costly and dangerous to transport, leading many to argue that it must be generated in distributed fashion, rather than in centralised facilities. Anything that could lead to smaller and more portable hydrogen generation is likely to be welcomed by proponents of green energy.

Huh.

Wonder if the heat generated during production could be used to drive a steam turbine at the same time...

That is merely a question of finding an audio lens arrangement for focussing hot air generated in widely dispersed locations into one searing jet of pure gobshite.

Glad you weren't around to bend Watt's ear.

Watt was using the concentrated biomass of millions of years of sunshine. Not this year's. Half of that cancels the other half out.

You don't seriously think that this years sunshine is up to supplying the requirments you have become accustomed to do you?

I'm afraid that is pure fantasy. Comforting I know. It allows you to continue on your merry way without any guilt feelings.

What's new?

Right. Since no single step will bring one to the doorstep of a solution, it's best not to take any steps at all.

Gotcha.

As long as by "any" you mean any. No backsliding to accomodate your desires and expectations.

Another breakthrough; sharp minds are busy trying to beat the deadline.

'Nanoporous' material gobbles up hydrogen fuel.
.
07 November 2006
Hydrogen-powered cars could one day store fuel safely and efficiently using polymers filed with nanoscopic holes.
.
Researchers have achieved a new record for absorbing hydrogen using such "nanoporous" polymers.
.
Hydrogen is tipped as a fuel of the future, as it can by used to generate electricity cleanly, generating only water as waste. However, it must normally be stored as a liquid, under extreme pressure, which makes it expensive to process and dangerous to handle.
.
So the hunt is on to find a storage medium that will absorb hydrogen readily and could, in future, be used to transport it cheaply and safely. This could be used inside a vehicle's fuel tank and within containers used to transport hydrogen around the country.

I believe the next revoloution (industrial revolution, communication/technology revolution) will be in energy storage systems. The big problem with solar is being able to store electricity generated during sunshine for use during non sun periods. The same it seems with hydrogen fuels.

Nothing will change until the price and availability of fossil fuels makes it economic to do so.

In recent discussion with a policy maker here in Aust. who said the government attitude was "we have an 80 year brown coal reserve and similar for oil. Every other form of energy production is more expensive. It would be political suicde to invest in alternative energy systems knowing the voter will pay more"
