Can you help me on this question?
Which 'C' is the term for the mandatory requirement to enlist in the military? Many thanks.
I would say conscription, upandrunning.
Hi Letty, I thought of conscription but that means by law - forced -. so I don't think that's the answer. Thanks though.
You are most welcome, upandrunning, but I do believe that mandatory and required by law are one and the same:
Conscription in the United States
The United States has employed conscription (mandatory military service, also called "the draft") several times, usually during war but also during the nominal peace of the Cold War. The U.S. discontinued the draft in 1973. Today, the Selective Service System remains in place as a contingency; young men are required to register so that a draft can be more readily resumed. The U.S. armed forces are now designated as "all-volunteer", although, in 2004 as well as during the 1991 Gulf war, some personnel were involuntarily kept in the military after their initial voluntary commitments had expired.
Thanks Letty, I will go with that. I'm in the UK and the quiz is UK, so I wasn't thinking of USA. Many thanks for your time.
many thanks, plainoldme, greatly appreciated
