I was just a kid when the first pictures of the far side of the moon were taken by Soviet robot spacecraft in the early 60s. That's why the major landmarks have names like "The Sea of Moscow". In the late 60's our Astronauts circled the moon, and were able to see things with a much better resolution. I remember hearing on the news the Astronauts were running out of names to give things. They even named one crater "Gator Crater".
