Can You Name This Bell Shaped Flower?

Bear and I were out for a walk this evening and a neighbor has a couple of large (5 ft) bushes(?) with these large bell shaped flowers on them. The flowers are each about 9-12" long. Absolutely beautuful in pale yellow, and the fragrance was very strong.

Any ideas?

Were they trumpet shaped?

Bloody hell! 9 to 12 inches?

Ermmm......Hibiscus?

It sounds like a tropical thing to me. Shaped for big humming birds and all that.

Sounds wonderful.

I've posted either here or somewhere else on them, as there was one overhanging a pool at a property we were landarchs for.

Much or all of the plant is poisonous. Well, hell, does that poison pool water? The owner was saying she didn't care, as she had a newborn, and I sent pool water stuffed with leaves and pods and whatever to a lab to see what they said, and it came back that, essentially, the clients would have to drink the pool..

Well, whew.

Datura, that's the name I was forgetting. Related to Jimson weed. And so on.

I grew Brugmansia and loved it. But be forewarned, before you injest enough to kill you, it's used as an aphrodisiac. Yeah, I called the folks at the local arboretum in my quest to find out about it.

To clarify, the lab mentioned, if I remember right, scopolomine (I know the word but don't remember the spelling), and it was the arboretum smarties that said the clients would have to drink the pool, and they who told me about its use as an aphrodisiac.

Still, I would't plant one in a playground.

They are very easy to grow and you can probably order it on line. They might even be hardy in London with some winter protection.

To clarify, the owner didn't want to cut down the Brugmansia, not the other way around. I wasn't trying to convince her to keep it there, gorgeous as it was. In the end, she and he opted to keep it, after seeing the report. And, yes, they had a pool safe fence, which we planted out with ...
guess..

Hibiscus.

What a mess-up. She, the vocal one of the couple, told us on first interview about redoing the pool area, that they adored the Hawaiian Islands.. wanted a tropical scene... (in, er, a semiarid desert)
so we came up with a tropical extravaganza with what drought tolerant overtones we could do, w/ the tropical bits including the Hibiscus.

We found out a long time later that she hates Hibiscus.
Oh... well. Time passed and they sold.
Design is ephemeral much of the time. Sometimes it's just a way of selling.

Lil K - That's exactly it! Isn't that beautiful? The flowers are huge!

I'll have to get pictures for you on my way home from work.

Thanks for the great info, Osso. Now, to keep Bear from eating it! Very Happy
