New literature student needs help with Blake!!

Hi
I'm new to all this and I found these great forums. The thing is I don't really understand Blake's "The Lamb" and "The Tyger". Is he saying that the lamb's so great that God chose its name to be his? Is the Tyger frightening? Or just imposing? What's the difference in both poem's enviorenments or landscapes? Actually I don't know if the lamb's landscape is the mead and stream, and the tyger's a forest in the night. Is that really the landscape or the environment? Is there a difference between these? And what is the real feeling of the poetical voice towards both? One last question, what does the poetical voice mean by thy fearful symmetry? Is it because in the Bible fear is not actually be scared, but have respect and admiration to God? I think these are too many questions, but I really hope you can help me. Here are both poems. Thank you.
XOXO

The Lamb

Little lamb, who made thee?
Does thou know who made thee,
Gave thee life, and bid thee feed
By the stream and o'er the mead;
Gave thee clothing of delight,
Softest clothing, woolly, bright;
Gave thee such a tender voice,
Making all the vales rejoice?
Little lamb, who made thee?
Does thou know who made thee?

Little lamb, I'll tell thee;
Little lamb, I'll tell thee:
He is called by thy name,
For He calls Himself a Lamb.
He is meek, and He is mild,
He became a little child.
I a child, and thou a lamb,
We are called by His name.
Little lamb, God bless thee!
Little lamb, God bless thee!

The Tyger

Tiger, tiger, burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

In what distant deeps or skies
Burnt the fire of thine eyes?
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand dare seize the fire?

And what shoulder and what art
Could twist the sinews of thy heart?
And, when thy heart began to beat,
What dread hand and what dread feet?

What the hammer? what the chain?
In what furnace was thy brain?
What the anvil? what dread grasp
Dare its deadly terrors clasp?

When the stars threw down their spears,
And watered heaven with their tears,
Did He smile His work to see?
Did He who made the lamb make thee?

Tiger, tiger, burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?

ethics
So, let me understand: if I put MY thoughts down here, do I get any part of the credit or the mark?

Sure glad that you aren't MY student. I'd flunk you in a heartbeat.

You just had to say yes or no, actually MY thoughts are within the questions. I think the questions that really don't have my doubtful thoughts are:
1.Difference between environment and landscape
2.Real feeling of the poetical voice towards them.

You didn't have to be so rude. I'm happy I'm not your student. Not everybody is as intelligent as you are, Mr.

flaws
Sorry, it's a personality flaw that I have. I dislike cheaters. Maybe someone else might indulge you.

..and by your own posting you indicated by the type of questions that you hadn't spent much energy thinking for yourself.

heh heh, Im sitting here on a deck restaurant, not far from the College of the Atlantic and theres kids doing HOEWORK on their laptops. I have to chuckle at your answers ragman. many of these kids ask questions in the science aned math forums and people actually supply the answers without thinking about what theyre doing. One time some kid wanted to know how to make C-4 and I yelled at the person who gave the kid the information . Its quite a sad commentary'

Hey kied, ya wanna understand what Blake is saying , look at his own drawings that go with many of his poems. "Tyger" is one of them.. Thats a hint not an answer.

That's true. Except that you are better off not looking too closely.

On the other hand, able2know is primarily a knowledge site.

I think we most help students by teaching them how to find answers themselves, even going so far as to help them with links, and sometimes even give answers as we understand them. Certainly help by discussing issues with them, preferably after getting them to identify issues with other than the homework assignment language.

Being mean to someone who comes here and asks is inappropriate, as we advertise as being helpful on questions. I admit I've changed my tune on this myself, as I was an early naysayer on homework questions.
Still, teach a man to fish...

At least nobody said "You're not supposed to understand Blake, he's a mystic!"

How annoying would that have been for the poor bloody student?

I did discuss an issue with him. I discussed modern ethics as applied to students.

Please show me where I was mean. What I did was I express my opinion. Let the chips fall where they may. Read my comment in full. I respect people who ATTEMPT to do their own thinking. Personally, I like helping people.

I do hear what you say about providing links, though.

You will find that the huge majority of my comments in the 4 years that I've been on A2K are very supportive and will continue to be so. I just have this quirk or flaw as I mentioned. I'm looking to start a support group. Any takers?

Thank you for your information Mr. Ragman. I don't know if you intended to be mean, but I'm very sensitive and I really felt ofended. As I said before, I'm not as intelligent as everyone else seems to be here, that's why I asked for help. I just wanted to know if I was in the right way. And I couldn't think more about it because I have to think about a lot more things. Thank you for your help anyway.

I think the operative line in the Tyger, which encapsulates both poems is, "Did he who made the lamb, make thee?" Ask yourself, why would the speaker wonder this?

And just compare the very words in the poems. A word like "furnace" contributes greatly to the atmosphere of the Tyger, the feel of it I guess. Then consider the context. I think he says, "In what furnace was thy brain?" A brain, in a furnace? An anvil? Does it seem like God is being compared to some kind of (oh, let's see, without giving it away) metal worker? That's a euphamism--now go look up euphamism.

Those are a few clues. But there are a million ways to look at these poems.

Probably you're mistaking "intelligence" and "knowledge"...when you'll acquire the latter, maybe you'll be able to know if you have the first...which I hope you do.
