Do dogs ever get "dog flu"? I guessed my little dog's Vet, if there was such a thing as "dog flu" and I couldn't get a straight answer out of him.

Ordinarily, the answer is no. There have been a couple of cases in Asia in the past year in which it has been thought that avian influenza has been transmitted to dogs, and it has been confirmed in a few cats. However, there is really no danger at this time. That's the good news. The bad news is that dogs, like all other mammals, have a plethora of viruses that infect them. Distemper, parvo, and herpes (Canine hepatitis) are all at the top of the list. Fortunately, good vaccines are available for all of these, and definitely should be administered annually. Does that help?
