I don't know no love song
I can't sing the blues anymore
But I can sing this song
You can sing this song
When I'm gone

from "alone" by the beautiful south

And we only smoke when bored
So we do two packs a day
And we've lost the difference
Between bored and lonely anyway

from "don't marry her" by the beautiful south

And your love life shines like cardboard
But your work shoes are glistening
She's a PhD in "I told you so"
You've a knighthood in "I'm not listening"

Everyday, I Write the Book

Elvis Costello

Don't tell me you don't know what love is
When you're old enough to know better
When you find strange hands in your sweater
When your dreamboat turns out to be a footnote
I'm a man with a mission in two or three editions

And I'm giving you a longing look
Everyday, everyday, everyday I write the book

Chapter One we didn't really get along
Chapter Two I think I fell in love with you
You said you'd stand by me in the middle of Chapter Three
But you were up to your old tricks in
Chapters Four, Five and Six

And I'm giving you a longing look
Everyday, everyday, everyday I write the book
The way you walk
The way you talk, and try to kiss me, and laugh
In four or five paragraphs
All your compliments and your cutting remarks
Are captured here in my quotation marks

And I'm giving you a longing look
Everyday, everyday, everyday I write the book
Don't tell me you don't know the difference
Between a lover and a fighter
With my pen and my electric typewriter
Even in a perfect world where everyone was equal
I'd still own the film rights and be working on the sequel

And I'm giving you a longing look
Everyday, everyday, everyday I write the book

From Bob Dylan's new album "Modern Times", this is from the song "Thunder on the Mountain"

Thunder on the mountain rolling to the ground
Gonna get up in the morning walk the hard road down
Some sweet day I'll stand beside my king
I wouldn't betray your love or any other thing

Gonna raise me an army, some tough sons of bitches
I'll recruit my army from the orphanages
I been to St. Herman's church, said my religious vows
I've sucked the milk out of a thousand cows

I got the porkchops, she got the pie
She ain't no angel and neither am I
Shame on your greed, shame on your wicked schemes
I'll say this, I don't give a damn about your dreams

Thunder on the mountain heavy as can be
Mean old twister bearing down on me
All the ladies in Washington scrambling to get out of town
Looks like something bad gonna happen, better roll your airplane down

There are many songs from which I could choose, some sad, others poignant or inspirational.

One that sticks in my mind, has such deep meaning, it almost reveals the secret of life itself.

I hope it inspires you, as it has inspired me over the years.

<AHEM>

THE CHICKEN SONG

Hold....a.....chicken in the air
Stick a deckchair up your nose
Buy a jum-bo jet
And then bury all your clothes
Paint your left knee green
Then extract your wisdom teeth
Form a string quartet
And pretend your name is Keeeeeeith

Skiiiiiin your-self alive
Learn to speak Ara-pahoe
Climb inside a dog
And behead an eskimo
Eat a Renault Four, with salami in your ears
Casserole your gran
Disembowel your-self with speeeeeears

(now...up an octave, and shout louder)

Hold....a....chicken in the air
Stick a deckchair up your nose
Yes you'll hear this song, in the holiday discos
And there's no escape in the clubs or in the bars
You would hear this song if you hol-idaaayed in Mars

Skiiiiin your-self alive
Learn to speak Arap-ahoe
Climb inside a dog
And behead an eskimo
Now you've heard it once
Your brain will spring a leak
And though you hate this song
You'll be hummmiiiing iiiit for weeks.

(From "Spitting Image"....No.1 in Britain for several weeks, during the 80's)

Truly a work of art.

If I could buy your love
Then I'd surely try my friend
And if I could pray
My prayers would never end
But if you want me to beg
I'll fall down on my knees
And ask you to come back
I'd be pleading for you to come back
I'd beg for you to come back to me

When I tell you that I love you
Don't test my love
Accept my love, don't test my love
Cause maybe I don't love you all that much

Last night, as the rains came to Sydney, I fell in love with-

Older Chests- Damien Rice

Older chests reveal themselves
Like a crack in a wall
Starting small, and grow in time
And we always seem to need the help
Of someone else
To mend that shelf
Too many books
Read me your favourite line

-all over again.

Bowie/S&G
"And these children that you spit on as they try to change thier worlds, are immune to your consultations, they're quite aware of what they're going through."

"Hello darkness my old friend, I've come to talk with you again. Because a vision sofly creeping, left it's seeds while I was sleeping and the vision that was planted in my brain, still remains. Within the sounds of silence."

Okay...so that last one was more of a verse, but still.

He stopped every clock in New York state
and every heart that heard him
and time itself was beaten and confused
and fell lamb-like under the spell of his fabulous flashing fingers

short and sweet, a theme song for some show that i don't think ever got produced

love the last line

If You Won't Leave Me I'll Find Somebody Who Will
Warren Zevon

Ever look out you window, babe
And wonder what was going down in the street below
Out where the four winds blow

Ever stand in the crossroads, babe
And know it didn't really matter which road you chose
Heaven knows

I'm a refugee from the mansion on the hill
And if you won't leave me I'll find somebody who will

@mj8877,
Quote:
I close my eyes, only for a moment, and the moment's gone
All my dreams, pass before my eyes, a curiosity
Dust in the wind, all they are is dust in the wind
Same old song, just a drop of water in an endless sea
All we do, crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see

Dust in the wind, All we are is dust in the wind

Don't hang on, nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky
It slips away, all your money won't another minute buy

Dust in the wind, All we are is dust in the wind

@Dorothy Parker,
couldn't think of just one lyric, but this whole song is brilliant.

If you want money in your pocket
and a top hat on your head
a hot meal on your table
and a blanket on your bed

well today is grey skies
tomorrow is tears
you'll have to wait til yesterday is here

Well I'm going to New York City
and I'm leaving on a train
and if you want to stay behind and
wait til I come back again

well today is grey skies
tomorrow is tears
you'll have to wait til yesterday is here

If you want to go
where the rainbows end
you'll have to say goodbye
all our dreams come true
baby up ahead
and it's out where your memories lie
well the road is out before me
and the moon is shining bright
what I want you to remember
as I disappear tonight

today is grey skies
tomorrow is tears
you'll have to wait til yesterday is here

Tom Waits-Yesterday is here.

He came a long way
Just to explain.
He kissed his boy as he lay sleeping,
Then he turned around and headed home again.
