I have 'doomed' as my answer, which I feel that is what the clue asks for. Lovatts would possibly pass damned but not dammed.

Stuck with what lmur & I suggest and you won't be wrong. I'd be pleased if in future you could name the particular puzzle from which Lovatts the clue is from, makes it easier to refer to.
