@edgarblythe,
Don't know that one by "the jester", edgar, but it does tell a story.

Another story of Egypt.

I used to have a bust of her when I lived in Virginia.

@Letty,
That Dylan song was written at the height of the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Nefertiti was rumored to walk like an Egyptian.

@edgarblythe,
Didn't know that was about The Cuban Missile Crisis, edgar.

Another song/poem that tells a story. Remember this?

LITTLE Orphan Annie's come to our house to stay,
An' wash the cups an' saucers up, an' brush the crumbs away,
An' shoo the chickens off the porch, an' dust the hearth, an' sweep,
An' make the fire, an' bake the bread, an' earn her board-an'-keep;
An' all us other children, when the supper-things is done,
We set around the kitchen fire an' has the mostest fun
A-list'nin' to the witch-tales 'at Annie tells about,
An' the Gobble-uns 'at gits you
Ef you
Don't
Watch
Out!

Now the song through the years.

A long time, Monterey Jack posted a version of this song by oysterband. Generally, they perform it as an uptempo, dance piece. Here it is as a ballad. Too bad this is a live recording off someone's phone.

I met a man whose brother said he knew a man who knew the Oxford girl ....
Is it true what you hear, did he do it out of fear?
Was the day drawing near when a child would start to show?
Was it rage or shame or damage to his name?
Was it something worse, does anybody know?

Did she pay a price for making them look twice?
Like a glimpse of paradise across a dull and bitter land?
Did she pass them by, did she dare to meet their eye?
Did she scorn them all and did they understand?

A grief to her father -did she really leave him?
a lover to her brother -yes we all believe him
temptation to her betters -no better than she should be
unfaithful to her lover -he always new she would be

She says: I never had a chance to prove them wrong
My time was short, the story long
No I never had a chance to prove them wrong
It's always them that write the song

Did he go to ground, was the suitcase ever found?
Did the police come swarming round on a trail already cold?
Did he lead them a dance, did he run away to France?
Or did he shop himself before the day was old?

O she was bound to loose if she set her face to choose
They never could excuse her for stirring up their fears
She was much to young, the earth has stopped her tongue
You can hear the voices calling down the years

She says: I never had a chance to prove them wrong
My time was short, the story long
No I never had a chance to prove them wrong
It's always them that write the song.

@Letty,
letty, likely Harold Gray was inspired by James Whitcomb Riley's poem. I believe Riley's Annie was Orphant Annie, the way he wrote it. Neverthelesss, I like the song Annie sang.

Thanks, pom, great song and I think that's kind of remarkable quality for a cellphone video at zoom, tho the frame rate is not unexpectedly kinda low, nice version too (and they go into "John Barleycorn" on it too). Thanks for the headsup on the new JT/ob CD--Newbury Comics finally got it in, tho what they got was the import, so nobody in the States may be issuing it, and I was just going to go listen to it when I discovered your post.

@edgarblythe,
Thanks for the lyrics to POM and MJ's song, edgar. Nice one, too.

Another poem that tells a story.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

Longfellow wrote the words to one of my very favorite songs. I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day.

@edgarblythe,
Here's a hidden gem by oysterband -- yes, I am obsessed -- my fav band.

Uptempo and very dancey in a sort of mosh pit way.

Are there still mosh pits?

@edgarblythe,
ah, edgar, that was the early version of My Fair Lady, right? I think Julie Andrews was truly ticked off because she didn't get to star in the remake. Odd, I noticed that they are having My Fair Lady at the Peabody auditorium in Daytona Beach.

Don't know how true this one is, but let's give it a shot.

@Letty,
I agree that Julie perhaps deserved the role in the film, but I love the way that film went together too much to complain. I find it a bit odd, that an artist who could really sing would be aced out by one who had to have the singing voice dubbed in, but it all works so beautifully. I saw it at a theater in Seattle, while serving aboard a Navy destroyer. I rank it among my more satisfying movie experiences.
