this insect was crawling around on my window, and I was wondering what it was... can anyone tell me?

I know the picture isn't great, it has red legs, a black and white body with a long stingerish looking thing, and wings.

That looks like the dreaded "Homo Fly". If you get bitten by one you suddenly have a desire to eat quiche and listen to Broadway show tunes. Beware!

I have no idea what it is but if it was on my window I would place a drinking glass over it,slip a piece of paper underneath, carry it out to the open air and shoo it off with a "good luck matey".

I remember them from when I lived out there, but I don't know what it is. Not an inquiring mind, I guess.

A dragon fly?
These can be many different colours but we see them here with vibrant reds and blue.

Possibly a lacewing of some kind. Lacewings are more usually green or light brown.

Nah, these are definitely more waspish, from what I remember (though maybe it's a disguise).

It's probably a type of Ichneumon Wasp. The long "stinger" looking thing on its abdomen is an ovipositor (for laying eggs). They come in a wide range of shapes and sizes.
