The sentences"One word is too often profaned, for me to profane it" and "One hope is too like despire, for prudence to smother" are from a poem of Shelley. What's their meanings? would you please tell me ?
Thank you very much for your help!
Because I can't surf on line every day,I can't express my thankness to you in time after you offer me the answer.I apologize for it.
Thank you very much!
1. If a word is often mis-used, and not kept "special", then the poet is saying that his use of the word (in whatever context he is describing) cannot debase it further.
2. I imagine the word is "desire" in the second phrase.
The meaning intended here seems to be: If you want something very much, you will risk anything to get it. You will not be careful (prudent) and your will not allow your attempt to be thwarted (smothered)
