George Abbott (yes, it's a double on the T) was actually the writer of the screenplay and dialogue for the 1930 film based on the book written by Erich Maria Remarque.

Abbott was also responsible for writing the book for several Broadway shows including The Boys From Syracuse, The Pajama Game, Where's Charley?, Fiorello!, A Tree Grows In Brooklyn as well as directing staging and appearing in several other Broadway shows See: Broadway Database website for further information.
