A rectangle and a triangle have equal areas. The length of the rectangle is 12 inches, and its width is 8 inches. If the base of the triangle is 32 inches, what is the length, in inches, of the altitude drawn to the base?

This is actually a relatively simple problem. A rectangle with a lenght of 12 inches and a width of 8 inches has an area of 96 square inches. The formula for the area of a triangle is the length times the altitude divided by two. Therefore, in order for the length of the triangle to be 32 inches and the area to be 96 inches, the altitude must be six inches. (6 X 32=192, divided by 2=96).
