Hey, Noddy.
Good one!
So ... will there be a mark on my forehead?
The Mark of Cain is invisible, but you'll always collect dirt under your fingernails.
rats and tomatoes
I put ONE ripe tomato on the ground...the rats ate that one and left the others alone. I put a new ripe tomato down every three days or so. Works for me. Works for the rats.
You have to follow the instructions for rats (they really are smarter than the average rodent), but it works:

The reviews give good insight concerning the good and bad about the product.

Hey, hey!
What a great idea!
Wished I thought of that last year when this was going on
I got real good at fried green tomatoes.
Man, those were good.
Ate a whole heaping plateful the first time I cooked them!

@dupre,
Here in Australia I just hang Moth Balls in the plants have not had a tomato taken for ages

@boppa54,
Moth balls poison the soil as they decompose and eventually the toxins get up into the plants through the roots via water. Being around mothballs can also cause brain damage in young children. Don't take my word for it, you can Google for details.
@Green Witch,
Hanging dried red chili peppers on the plant will accomplish the same deterrence in most cases.
