One of the things that young girls struggled with, before the rise of feminism, was the whole concept of sexuality. There was a common expression that was bandied about, if a young girl "gave in" to the persuasion of her boyfriend. "Will he respect me in the morning?"

The above song well illustrated the conflict that was going on with teenage girls in the 1950's.

I never realized what Carole King was alluding to

muche less subtle...a song from the pen of Hal David

Johnny Get Angry

Johnny, I said we were through
Just to see what you would do
You stood there and hung your head
Made me wish that I were dead

Oh, Johnny get angry, Johnny get mad
Give me the biggest lecture I ever had
I want a brave man, I want a cave man
Johnny, show me that you care, really care for me

Every time you danced with me
You let Freddy cut in constantly
When he'd ask, you'd never speak
Must you always be so meek?

Every girl wants someone who
She can always look up to
You know I love you, of course
Let me know that you're the boss

Johnny, get angry, Johnny
Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny
FADE

this one is just ....amazing

He Hit Me{And It Felt Like A Kiss}

He hit me and it felt like a kiss
He hit me but it didn't hurt me
He couldn't stand to hear me say
That i'd been with someone new
And when i told him i had been untrue
He hit me and it felt like a kiss

He hit me and i knew he loved me
Cause if he didn't care for me
I could have never made him mad
He hit me and i was glad
Baby won't you stay...

He hit me and it felt like a kiss
He hit me and i knew i loved him
Cause when he took me in his arms
With all the tenderness there is
He hit me and he made me feel
Baby won't you stay...

can't remember who did this one...the Crystals...Shirrels?

I think Poe dealt with Angry Johnny:

Johnny, Angry Johnny, this is Jezebel in Hell
I wanna kill you, I wanna blow you...away

I can do it you gently
I can do it with an animal's grace
I can do it with precision
I can do it with gormet taste

Chorus:
But either way
Either (way), either way
I wanna kill you
I wanna blow you...
Away

He Hit Me (and it Felt Like a Kiss)

Quote:
Carole King and Gerry Goffin wrote this. They were inspired to write it after Little Eva told them about her relationship with an abusive boyfriend who beat her almost on a regular basis. When they asked her why she tolerated the abuse, she answered that it symbolized how much he loved her.
Due to the subject matter and lyrics, this was a complete failure. It was disliked by the public, and radio stations denied the song airplay. The Crystals hated the song as well. Why Phil Spector convinced them to record it and then tried to release it as a single remains a mystery today.

This was recorderd by the Crystals in 1963.

Thanks for the Little Eva trivia...which reminds me...she was their baby-sitter and they gave her "Locomotion" which proved to be nest egg for her retirement

I hope this is not too much of digression but that reminds me so much of when "Every Breath You Take" came out. Some of my friends thought it was such a beautiful love song. I thought they were flipping nuts!

Every breath you take
Every move you make
Every bond you break
Every step you take
I'll be watching you

Every single day
Every word you say
Every game you play
Every night you stay
I'll be watching you

O can't you see
You belong to me
How my poor heart aches with every step you take

Every move you make
Every vow you break
Every smile you fake
Every claim you stake
I'll be watching you

Since you've gone I been lost without a trace
I dream at night I can only see your face
I look around but it's you I can't replace
I feel so cold and I long for your embrace
I keep crying baby please

Noddy- Were you thinking of this Billie Holiday Song?

Quote:
My Man

It cost me a lot
But there's one thing that I've got
It's my man
It's my man

Cold or wet
Tired, you bet
All of this I'll soon forget
With my man

He's not much on looks
He's no hero out of books
But I love him
Yes, I love him

Two or three girls
Has he
That he likes as well as me
But I love him

I don't know why I should
He isn't true
He beats me, too
What can I do?

Oh, my man, I love him so
He'll never know
All my life is just a spare
But I don't care
When he takes me in his arms
The world is bright
All right

What's the difference if I say
I'll go away
When I know I'll come back
On my knees someday

For whatever my man is
I'm his forevermore

Camptown Races was a huge hit for Steven Foster

check out his attempts to capture black vernacular...

De long tail filly and de big black hoss -- Doo-dah! doo-dah!
Dey fly de track and dey both cut across -- Oh! doo-dah day!
De blind hoss sticken in a big mud hole -- Doo-dah! doo-dah!
Can't touch bottom wid a ten foot pole -- Oh! doo-dah day!

Chorus

Old muley cow come on to de track -- Doo-dah! doo-dah!
De bob-tail fling her ober his back -- Oh! doo-dah day!
Den fly along like a rail-road car -- Doo-dah! doo-dah!
Runnin' a race with a shootin' star -- Oh! doo-dah day!

Being a young sprogling during the sixties, one of my most vivid memories was watching my two sisters (ten and eleven years older than me) dancing around the record player in their stiletto heels, and Dad moaning at them because they made loads of small round dents on the lino flooring.

Another thing that they seemed to do, was to get all weepy over songs that involved the hero (male) either roaring off on his motor bike and getting killed, or attempting to win the money in a stock car race so that he can buy an engagement ring, also getting killed. There were several more songs that involved getting killed, and they seemed to be all the rage.
My brothers and I used to sit there and try not to giggle, but when it got too much, we used to be chased and, when caught, were subject to hair pulling and girly type slaps.

These are two of the songs that stick out in my mind......

TELL LAURA I LOVE HER.....

Tommy and Laura were lovers he wanted to give her everything
Flowers presents and most of all a wedding ring
He saw a sign for a stockcar race a thousand dollar prize it read
He couldn't get Laura on the phone so to her mother Tommy said
Tell Laura I love her tell Laura I need her
Tell Laura I may be late I've something to do that cannot wait
He drove his car to the racing ground he was the youngest driver there
The crowd roared as they started to race
Around the truck they drove at a deadly pace
No one knows what happened that day how his car overturned in flames
But as they pulled him from the twisted wreck
With his dying breath they heard him say
Tell Laura I love her tell Laura I need her
Tell Laura not to cry my love for her will never die

Now in the chapel Laura prays for her Tommy who passed away
It was just for Laura that he lived and died alone in the chapel she can hear him cry
Tell Laura I love her...
My love for her will never die

THE LEADER OF THE PACK (vroom vroom)

Is she really going out with him?
Well, there she is. Let's ask her.
Betty, is that Jimmy's ring you're wearing?
Mm-hmm
Gee, it must be great riding with him
Is he picking you up after school today?
Uh-uh
By the way, where'd you meet him?

I met him at the candy store
He turned around and smiled at me
You get the picture? (yes, we see)
That's when I fell for (the leader of the pack)

My folks were always putting him down (down, down)
They said he came from the wrong side of town
(whatcha mean when ya say that he came from the wrong side of town?)
They told me he was bad
But I knew he was sad
That's why I fell for (the leader of the pack)

One day my dad said, "Find someone new"
I had to tell my Jimmy we're through
(whatcha mean when ya say that ya better go find somebody new?)
He stood there and asked me why
But all I could do was cry
I'm sorry I hurt you (the leader of the pack)

[Spoken:]
He sort of smiled and kissed me goodbye
The tears were beginning to show
As he drove away on that rainy night
I begged him to go slow
But whether he heard, I'll never know

Look out! Look out! Look out! Look out!

I felt so helpless, what could I do?
Remembering all the things we'd been through
In school they all stop and stare
I can't hide the tears, but I don't care
I'll never forget him (the leader of the pack)

The leader of the pack - now he's gone
The leader of the pack - now he's gone
The leader of the pack - now he's gone
The leader of the pack - now he's gone

Okay, here's where I have a problem. All of my family were musical, so I am not certain where one genre stops and another begins. Combine that with the young vocalists who now sing the oldies, and the fact that our jazz quartet had to play according to theme, and you have a fuzzy boundary. I just know there was NEVER any physical abuse in my family of any kind.

For example, I have no idea the period in which this song appeared, but it suddenly surfaced, and that's the way my musical history works; sorta like a sidewinder.
Opus 17 Don't You Worry 'Bout Me Lyrics

I can see,
There ain't no room for me.
You're only holdin' up your heart in sympathy.
If there's another man,
Then girl I understand.
Go on and take his hand,
And don't you worry 'bout me.
I'll be blue,
And I'll be cryin' too.
But girl you know I only want what's best for you.
What good is all my pride,
If our true love has died.
Go on and be his bride,
And don't you worry 'bout me.

I'll be strong,
I'll try to carry on.
Although you know it won't be easy when you're gone.
I'll always think of you,
The tender love we knew.
But somehow I'll get through,
So don't you worry 'bout me.
Ooo-oo,
Baby.
Sweetie pie,
Before you say goodbye.
Remember if he ever leaves you high and dry.
Don't cry alone in pain,
Don't ever feel ashamed.
If you want me again,
Just don't you worry 'bout me.
I love you,
No matter what you do.
I'll spend my whole life waitin' if you want me too.
And if this is goodbye,
You know I'd rather die.
Than let you see me cry,
'Cause then you'd worry 'bout me.

I'll be strong,
I'll try to carry on.
Although you know it won't be easy when your gone.
I'll always think of you,
The tender love we knew.
But somehow I'll get through,
So don't you worry 'bout me.
I'll be strong,
I'll try to carry on.
Although you know it won't be easy when your gone.
I'll always think of you,
The tender love we knew.
But somehow I'll get through,
So don't you worry 'bout me.

Then there is the other version: "Don't Worry 'bout me, I'll get along."

Somehow this Nancy Sinatra song sounded a lot more sinister when Ani DiFranco did it--maybe "exposed it" is a better way to put it.

Wishin' and Hopin' and thinkin' and prayin'
Plannin' and dreamin' each night of his charms
That won't get you into his arms
So if you're looking to find love you can share
All you gotta do is hold him
And kiss him and love him
And show him that you care

Show him that you care just for him
Do the things he likes to do
Wear your hair just for him
Girl, you won't get him wishin' and a-hopin'
Thinkin' and a-prayin'
Just wishin' and hopin' and thinkin' and prayin'
Plannin' and dreamin' his kisses will start
That won't get you into his heart
So if you're thinkin' of havin' true lovin'
All you've gotta do is hold him and kiss him
And squeeze him and love him
Do it, and after you do you will be his

At the risk of opening a whole 'nother can of worms: if space would allow it, I'd reprint the entire libretto of Così fan tutte.
