Note:
Apothecary units are distinct from all others.
9mm = .38 special
7.62 mm = 30 calibre
6mm = .25 calibre
5.56 mm = honest by gosh .223
With these conversions as a rough guide, you can hardly go wrong.
Once again, Mr. Stillwater is correct, of course.

Opinion seems to be divided on that. Among the ladies anyway.
Depends on whose size u r talking abt !!
millimeter is almost 39 thousandths of an inch. That last bit (occasionally refered to as a mil) is pronounced "thou'".
Thou'... millimeters... thou'... millimeters... just anouther day in the life of a metrologist.
Or as we like to say
What's a couple of thou' between friends?
(Guatam, you know the answer to that question?)
Nah, we are more like "what's a couple of mils between friends"
We also used to say "Close enough for government work."
what's a couple of mils between friends?
It's a condom.
Changing to metric
The sooner - the better.
Do not use conversions, think in metric.
Do not change over 10 years or longer, set a deadline.
We know metrics, our money is metric.
Teach only metric, discontinue the imperial system.
Biggest mistakes made:
Try to convert everything!
Drag change out over long time periods.
Newsmedia - Weather stop dumbing down of US by converting everything from weather to space travel.
Biggest problem:
US Government - no backbone!
We need leaders not vote collectors.
Last but not least: If I would be competing with the US industry, I would hire the best lobbyist to keep the US on the imperial system and I am not sure this is not the case.
