I thought amoeba was latin, and I'm partial to latin. Also, to late. Ain't no amebae around here, they are too dysenteric. Chilli? Seems like a maladaptive spelling attempt by some who have only heard the word spoken. Harrumph!!!\ Or is it harumph?
Well, the Merriam Webster says we're both right. It's from New Latin, derived in turn from the Greek.
It also lists ameba only as a variation of amoeba.
Seems the scientists couldn't convince the dictionary people that ameba was more correct than amoeba either! I'm going to keep spelling it amoeba, thank you very much.
amoeba
don't give a smeg about whether you spell chili with one or two l's.

Nah - extinct for eternity is internally logically contradictory.
