How many halved cherry tomatoes make 1 cup?
About half cup of whole cherry tomatoes.
I dunno, hingehead - I doubt whole tomatoes would double in volume when sliced in half. If anything, I'd think halving them might result in the original sample occupying a bit less volume than if left unsliced.
Whatever, the volume of a cup is 14.44 cubic inches close-enough. Assuming a cherry tomato volume of around ¾ cubic inch, I figure around 20 of the intact puppies oughtta suffice, close enough for cooking, anyhow.
Assuming the tomatoes have a 1" diameter, their volume is about 0.52 cubic inches. Random close packing of spheres in three dimensions have packing densities of about 0.64. That falls just short of 18 tomatoes per cup. However, the packing will become more dense if the tomatoes are halved; so 20 is probably a reasonable guess.
Elegantly done, markr.
Well, thats is then - I believe we can settle on 18 to 20.
.....but only if they are 1 inch cherry tomatoes. What is the international standard for a cherry tomatoe? I myself believe it to be 2.5cm
Good point. I wonder if there's an International Cherry Tomato Standards Commission - if not, perhaps there should be - clear things up, set out rules, and remove the guesswork.
I prefer Sweet 100's to the standard cherry tomato.
Are Sweet 100's anything like Swisher Sweets?
Would you like some norwegian beaver cheese?
Hey, is a cherry tomato a fruit? More of a fruit than a tomato? I knew the US had some weird law making tomatoes vegetables - and I found it!

Don't believe the rumours - it just acts a little camp.
dadpad must have been listening to some old Lena Horne 78s.
