1. If the intensity of one earthquake is 200 times the intensity of another, determine the difference in their magnitude.

2. 5[(3)^(2x-1)] = 4^(5x+2). Find x

3. Write the simplest polynomial equation with the following information: 2 is a root, 3i is a root, -4 is a double root, and the y-intercept is 10.

4. The population of a colony of cells growing exponetially in culture is 300 after 2 minutes and 1400 after 5 minutes. Find the growth formula for this culture and estimate the population of the colony after 20 minutes.

Homework?

1. The Richter scale is logritmic. An earthquake of magnitude 6 is 10 times more intense (energetic?) than an earthquake of magnitude 5.

2. Use logarithms and exponents to isolate the x factors---then use normal algebraic methods

3. Any polynomial can be expressed as (x+a)(x+b)(x+c)....=y the roots are x=-a, x=-b and so on. Hint complex roots come in pairs and the y intercept occurs when x=0

4> Another exponent rule- use logrithms to find the doubling time of the colony.

ok for #2, i figured u are suppose to use log, but do you start by multiplying 5 and 3 together? please explain

and then for #1 and #4, is there a formula for this?

log(ab)=log(a)+log(b)
