Jjorge: "Meeting Point" is beautiful.

Music, Maestro, Please (words byHerb Magidson, music, Allie Wrubel)

A table near the band
A small one.
Some cigarettes, a drink
Yes, a tall one.
And, waiter, I could use
A chaser for my blues.

Tonight I mustn't think of her.
Music, maestro, please.!
Tonight
Tonight I must forget
How much I need her
So, Mister Leader
Play your lilting melodies
Ragtime, jazztime, swing
Any old thing
To help me ease the pain
That solitude can bring.

She used to like waltzes
So, please don't play a waltz.
She danced divinely
And I loved her so
But, there I go.

Tonight I mustn't think of her
No more memories
Sing out
tonight I must forget.
Music, maestro, Please!

Can't believe I forgot this classic (Billie Holiday's rendition is better than Frankie's, IMO):

"One for My Baby"
Writer(s): Johnny Mercer/Harold Arlen

It's quarter to three, there's no one in the place
Except you and me
So set 'em' up Joe, I got a little story
I think you should know

We're drinking my friend, to the end
Of a brief episode
Make it one for my baby
And one more for the road

I know the routine, put another nickel
In the machine
I feel kind of bad, can't you make the music
Easy and sad

I could tell you a lot, but it's not
In a gentleman's code
Make it one for my baby
And one more for the road

You'd never know it, but buddy I'm a kind of poet
And I've got a lot of things I'd like to say
And if I'm gloomy, please listen to me
Till it's talked away

Well that's how it goes, and Joe I know your gettin'
Anxious to close
Thanks for the cheer
I hope you didn't mind
My bending your ear

But this torch that I found, It's gotta be drowned
Or it's gonna explode
Make it one for my baby
And one more for the road

' I'LL BE SEEING YOU'
(1944, sung by Bing Crosby)

I'll be seeing you in all the old familiar places
That this heart of mine embraces all day through
In that small café, the park across the way
The children's carousel, the chestnut trees, the wishing well

I'll be seeing you in every lovely summer's day
In everything that's light and gay
I'll always think of you that way
I'll find you in the mornin' sun
And when the night is new
I'll be looking at the moon
But I'll be seeing you

I'll find you in the mornin' sun
And when the night is new
I'll be looking at the moon
But I'll be seeing you

Irving Berlin - You Keep Coming Back Like A Song

Can't run away from you, dear
I've tried so hard but I fear
You'll always follow me near and far.
Just when I think that I'm set
Just when I've learned to forget
I close my eyes, dear, and there you are.

You keep coming back like a song
A song that keeps saying, remember
The sweet used-to-be
That was once you and me
Keeps coming back like an old melody.

The perfume of roses in May
Return to my room in December
From out of the past where forgotten things belong
You keep coming back like a song.

SHE FELL AWAY
Nick Cave

Once she lay open like a road
Carved apart the madness that I stumbled from
But she fell away
She fell away
Shed me like a skin
She fell away
Left me holding everything
Once the road lay open like a girl
And we drank and laughed and threw the bottle over
But she fell away
She fell away
I did not see the cracks form
As I knelt to pray
I did not see the crevice yawn, no
Sometimes
At night I feel the end it is at hand
My pistol going crazy in my hand
For she fell away
O she fell away
Walked me to the brink
She fell away
I did not see her fall
To better days
Sometimes I wonder was she ever there at all
She fell away
She fell away
She fell away

'A Man Without Love'

I can remember when we walked together
Sharing a love I thought would last forever
Moonlight to show the way so we can follow
Waiting inside her eyes was my tomorrow
Then somethin' changed her mind, her kisses told me
I had no lovin' arms to hold me

Every day I wake up, then I start to break up
Lonely is a man without love
Every day I start out, then I cry my heart out
Lonely is a man without love

Every day I wake up, then I start to break up
Knowing that it's cloudy above
Every day I start out, then I cry my heart out
Lonely is a man without love

I cannot face this world that's fallen down on me
So, if you see my girl please send her home to me
Tell her about my heart that's slowly dying
Say I can't stop myself from crying

Every day I wake up, then I start to break up
Lonely is a man without love
Every day I start out, then I cry my heart out
Lonely is a man without love

Every day I wake up, then I start to break up
Knowing that it's cloudy above
Every day I start out, then I cry my heart out
Lonely is a man without love

Every day I wake up, then I start to break up
Lonely is a man without love
Every day I start out, then I cry my heart out
Lonely is a man without love

Sonnet -- XXIX

When in disgrace with fortune and men's eyes
I all alone beweep my outcast state,
And trouble deaf heaven with my bootless cries,
And look upon myself, and curse my fate,
Wishing me like to one more rich in hope,
Featured like him, like him with friends possessed,
Desiring this man's art, and that man's scope,
With what I most enjoy contented least;
Yet in these thoughts my self almost despising,
Haply I think on thee, and then my state,
Like to the lark at break of day arising
From sullen earth, sings hymns at heaven's gate;
For thy sweet love remembered such wealth brings
That then I scorn to change my state with kings.

Wm. Shakespeare

This speaks of longing, I think:

Spring Rain by Sarah Teasdale

I thought I had forgotten,
But it all came back again
Tonight with the first spring thunder
In a rush of rain.

I remembered a darkened doorway
Where we stood while the storm swept by,
Thunder gripping the earth
And lightning scrawled on the sky.

The passing motor busses swayed,
For the street was a river of rain,
Lashed into little golden waves
In the lamp light's stain

With the wild spring rain and thunder
My heart was wild and gay;
Your eyes said more to me that night
Than your lips would ever say.

I thought I had forgotten,
But it all came back again
Tonight with the first spring thunder
In a rush of rain.

One of my all time favorites.. ok.. so its an 80's tune but its classic and beautifully written

Richard Marxs

"Right here waiting"

Oceans apart day after day and I slowly go insane
I hear your voice on the line but it doesn't stop the pain
If I see you next to never how can we say forever

* Wherever you go whatever you do
I will be right here waiting for you
Whatever it takes or how my heart breaks
I will be right here waiting for you

I took for granted, all the times that I though would last somehow
I hear the laughter, I taste the tears but I can't get near you now
Oh, can't you see it baby you've got me goin' crazy

[Repeat *]

I wonder how we can survive this romance
But in the end if I'm with you I'll take the chance
Oh, can't you see it baby you've got me goin' crazy

[Repeat *]

Gen,

I've always liked "Right here waiting". Thanks for posting.

Piffka

Although Sonnet XIX was surely written as a romantic poem, I don't relate to it as such.
I'll explain.
I first read it about ten years ago at a time that I was feeling sorry for myself. Then It made me think of my beloved daughter, away at college, and how much she meant to me -- so I sent it to her.

Raggedyaggie

'Spring Rain' is heartbreakingly beautiful. It brings a tear to the eye of this foolish old man.

A simple, but touching song written by Brendan Nolan, whom I used to see play regularily while at school in Montreal...

THE WIDOW'S WALK

"In the summer of 1978 I stayed in a house in Maine that had a widow's walk, a very small room at the top of the house. It looked out over the harbor and had a good view of the boats as they came home. Many years later while thinking about that time, this song materialized. The reference to "silkie" is the legend of the seal-people who have the ability to come on land and live as humans. However, if they return to the water they revert to their original form forever."

She stood by the window
As the waves crashed the shore
To watch him come home
As he had times before

REFRAIN
Carry him home to me
Break the sea down for him
Carry my love home to me

It's late in the year
And the storm winds awaken
To the hardiest of sailors
The sea does not beckon

REFRAIN

At their shady cove moorings
The small boats rock gently
Safe from the sea winds
Till the new season's plenty

REFRAIN

This room is my refuge
From the toils of the day
It's here I find peace
And it's here I can pray

REFRAIN

If the sea take my love
To his rest in the ocean
God make me a silkie
That I could lie with him.

Yesterday I bought a two CD set, 'BeeGees. Their Greatest Hits'
Here's one of my faves. Remember it?

I'd say it fits our category of 'Longing' !!

TO LOVE SOMEBODY
by The BeeGees

There's a light
A certain kind of light
That never shone on me
I want my life to be
To live with you
To live with you

There's a way
Everybody says
To do each and every little thing
But what does it bring
If I ain't got you
Ain't got... baby

You don't know what it's like
Baby, you don't know what it's like
To love somebody
To love somebody
The way I love you

In my brain
I see your face again
I know my frame of mind
You ain't got to be so blind
And I'm blind, so so so blind

I'm a man, can't you see what I am
I live and I breathe for you
But what good does it do
If I ain't got you
Ain't got... baby

You don't know what it's like
Baby, you don't know what it's like
To love somebody
To love somebody
The way I love you

You don't know what it's like
Baby, you don't know what it's like
To love somebody
To love somebody
The way I love you

No-no-no-no-no-no
You don't know what it's like
Baby, you don't know what it's like.....

When day is done
and shadows fall
I dream of you.

When day is done
I think of all
the joys we knew

That yearning, returning,
to hold you in my arms,
won't go love, I know love,
without you, night has lost it's charms.

When day is done
and grass is wet
with twilight's dew,
my lonely heart is sinking
with the sun.

Although I miss your tender kiss
the whole day through,
I miss you most of all
when day is done.

Music and original German lyrics by Robert Katscher. English lyrics by B. G. DeSylva

and now, Jjorge, there is a song that is haunting me - a song my Mother used to sing - a real heart-breaker. The tune is running through my head, but I can't get the words together. The song was called "Forgotten",but all I can remember is:

Forgotten you,
Well if forgetting
Means yearning with all my heart.
---------------------
And the last lines:

Well, if this means forgetting
You're right here, dear,
and I have forgotten you there.

(I'd love to hear those words again. )

There is at least one song called 'Forgotten' but I don't think it's the song you're looking for:

"Forgotten"

From the top to the bottom
Bottom to top I stop
At the core I've forgotten
In the middle of my thoughts
Taken far from my safety
The picture is there
The memory won't escape me
But why should I care
[Chorus x2]

There's a place so dark you can't see the end
Skies cock back and shock that which can't defend
The rain then sends dripping / acidic question
Forcefully, the power of suggestion
Then with the eyes shut / looking thought the rust and rot
And dust / a small spot of light floods the floor
And pours over the rusted world of pretend
The eyes ease open and its dark again

[Chorus x1]

In the memory you'll find me
Eyes burning up
The darkness holding me tightly
Until the sun rises up

Moving all around / screaming of the ups and downs
Pollution manifested in perpetual sound
The wheels go round and the sunset creeps behind
Street lamps, chain-link and concrete
A little piece of paper with a picture drawn floats
On down the street till the wind is gone
The memory now is like the picture was then
When the paper's crumpled up it can't be perfect again

[Chorus x2]

In the memory you'll find me
Eyes burning up
The darkness holding me tightly
Until the sun rises up

Now you got me caught in the act
You bring the thought back
I'm telling you that
I see it right through you
[x7]

In the memory you'll find me
Eyes burning up
The darkness holding me tightly
Until the sun rises up
[x2]

Jjorge: Thanks for posting Forgotten (great lyrics), but not the one I'm trying to remember. It is so frustrating that I can only remember four lines of a song that was once one of my favorites. Too many favorites, I guess.

'I Can't Make You Love Me'

Turn down the lights
Turn down the bed
Turn down these voices
inside my head

Lay down with me
Tell me no lies
Just hold me close,
don't patronize

Don't patronize me

Cause I can't make you love me
if you don't
You can't make your heart feel
something it won't
Here in the dark
in these final hours
I will lay down my heart
And I'll feel the power
but you won't
No, you won't
Cause I can't make you love me
if you don't

I'll close my eyes
then I won't see
the love you don't feel
when you're holding me

Morning will come
and I'll do what's right
just give me till then
to give up this fight

give up this fight

Cause I can't make you love me
if you don't
You can't make your heart feel
something it won't
Here in the dark
in these final hours
I will lay down my heart
And I'll feel the power
but you won't
No, you won't
Cause I can't make you love me
if you don't

@Raggedyaggie,
Hi ! Thank you for quoting what you remember of "Forgotten" My mother is searching for that song too! She says "The song I am looking for is called "Forgotten You?" My guess is that it would have been written in WWI or Maybe in the time of the early musicals in NY? It even has the sound of a really early Berlin...Quite short and very simple. What I remember is "Forgotten you? Well, if forgetting means dreaming all the day of the long hours now since you .....???? Lots of other lines in here ending with " I have forgotten you then' OR ' THEN I HAVE FORGOTTEN YOU,DEAR."
My mom can't believe she has forgotten the words after hearing my grandmother sing it so often --- it was her favorite song. LeapingLizardUK
