Hi Dutchy, Butterfly and anyone else who may be interested.
I have been given a copy of Cluewords 60 - I cannot say I am too impressed -
a) the writing is so tiny and
b) the white writing on the black background is hard to read.
I often silently castigate "Christine" (meaning Lovatts in general) for being too narrow and pedantic with some clues and so very lax with others, when the strangest slang is sometimes used. I find with the Cluewords and the Maxi competitions that sometimes the relationship between the clue and the answer is very nebulous. Some examples:
limp = LISTLESS
flirts = WOMANISES
no man's land = LIMBO
and should "embark" be GET IN or GET ON?
Can anyone confirm these or come up with better, please?
I think I'm going bonkers - I can only do two or three clues before those pesky little white letters start merging with each other. I may be asking for help over the next few days. All advice and comments much appreciated!
Cluewords no 60
Sorry Lezzles just checked and I have posted my entry. I agree about the small letters its terrible to be so young and have bad eyesight, its enough to give you aheadache (again). Thanks for all your help with the cryptics.
Regards Tuesday
Hi lezzles
Perhaps you may need a stronger pair of glasses, I know, it helped me. LOL
Well the answers you have are exactly the same as mine, so listless, womanises and limbo are confirmed.
For embark I have submitted "GET ON".
My reference is:
Quick definitions (get on)
verb: appear in a show, on T.V., radio, etc.
verb: grow late or (of time) elapse
verb: get on board of (trains, buses, ships, aircraft, etc.)
verb: grow old or older
verb: have smooth relations
verb: get on the back of
verb: develop in a positive way
Hope this put your weary mind at ease.
Regards Dutchy.
Thanks to you both!
I won't be doing any more until tomorrow's daylight, but at least I am more confident about those above.
Hi Lezzles,
The small letters definitely put a strain on the eyes, I agree with you 100%!
I have the same answers as yourself and Dutchy for the above clues.
For 'embark' I have put 'get on', but I am pretty sure 'get in' will also be accepted as I have found both answers to be synonyms of 'embark' in the Chambers Crossword Dictionary, and also online at Thesaurus.com.
Hope this helps.
Warm regards, Butterfly
Thanks for that Butterfly!
I finally went for Get On, but if you head off in a limo you Get In, so I think either would be okay.
Here's a big, big laugh! I stuck with the Maxi and finally finished it. There was one word I have been looking for for days -
an intellectual person - WI?P.
Just couldn't figure out what it could be. Then suddenly I realised the clue was - an ineffectual person! Duh! Give me the Stinker, Demon and all the good old Cryptics you can throw at me - but spare me the Cluewords!
Anyway thank you all - you too Tuesday - for your help. Good luck to us all!!
Hi Lezzles,
I'm glad you got the Maxi finished, well done! I hope all that hard work and effort brings you the very best of luck in the competition- I will also be keeping my fingers crossed for you
Take care, warm regards Butterfly
