math problems:

1. find x if the reciprocal of x+2 is x-2

2. find q if the graph of 3x+(2q-3)y=x-2qy+10 is the horizontal line.

3. Diana's father travels 21.5 miles by car to go to work. He travels part of the trip through West U at an average of 30 mph. The other part of the trip, he travels on the freeway at the rate of 50 mph. The time he travels on the freeway is twice the time he travels in the neighborhood. How long it takes him to get to work?

4. A box is made from a 60 by 80 in piece of cardboard by cutting equal squares from the corners and folding up the sides. The box's volume is five times greater than the volume of a cube with one side equal to the height of the box. What is the volume of th box?

Think these through

1) What is a reciprocal? What is the reciprocal of (X+2)? Once you have that set it equal to (X-2) & combine to get an expression in some form of X.---Hint= there are 2 possible solutions.

2) On an X-Y coordinate space the standard form of a line is y=mx+b & a horizontal line has no slope (m=0). So take your expression in x, y, & q and put it in the standard form of a line and determine the q where the slope is 0. Hint if you've written it correctly the solution of q is a limit.

3) Pick two variable for the time in urbanity and the time on the highway. The total time of the trip is the sum of these two variables, The total distance traveled is the sum of the products of the travel speed and the time spent at those speeds (one is the speed in urbanity times the time in urbanity). The second part of this question gives a relation between these two variables.. Hint don't forget units

4) The box?-making the assumption that the box has no top, I'd recommend drawing this one out on paper?-call the cutout your variable?-take the 60 by 80 piece of cardboard and cut off of the four corners a square with a side equal to this variable and fold up the sides to make an open box. Now what is the volume, base times width times height right? Then think about what these three dimensions are. Now for the second clue?-the volume is 5 times the volume of a cube the height of the flat box?-think about the dimension of the height of the box you drew on the paper and equate these two pieces of information. Now you have the expression you can solve using algebra. Hint: you'll get two answers but only one will make sense.
