Quote:New Yorkers caught Mega Millions fever yesterday, lining up to buy tickets for last night's $145 million drawing - and dreaming aloud of how they would spend it.
"I have a dollar and a dream," said Vanessa Sanquiche, 29, a real estate tenant-relations specialist from the Bronx, planning a sweet life in Italy if fortune comes her way.
The Mega winning numbers turned out to be 16, 25, 31, 43, 46 and Mega Ball 28. But Cathy Nesbitt, 51, a case manager at a Manhattan insurance firm, who was buying $50 worth of tickets at Spectrum News in Grand Central Terminal, regretted that she couldn't get her hands on some Powerball tickets.
"If we were in Connecticut or Pennsylvania, we would buy the Powerball," she said. The Powerball jackpot for tonight's drawing had reached an all-time record of $365 million yesterday. The game is played in 28 states, but not in New York.
"I'm going to Pennsylvania tonight to buy tickets," said Nesbitt's colleague, Sebastian Berdichevsky, 24, of White Plains.
Clinton Downer, 54, a chef at the Waldorf-Astoria, already had the menu for the celebration dinner. "I would cook a 6-ounce filet topped with blue cheese, Bearnaise sauce and fingerling potatoes," he said.
But tonight's staggering Powerball jackpot might have overshadowed Mega Millions sales.
"The big lotto is in Connecticut, so the big money - they spend there," said Dipak Patel, 45, a lottery vendor.
And the beat goes on. There was no winner in the Mega Millions last night and as for powerball we will have to wait until tonight.
For those that buy into the game. Do you do so on a steady basis or only when the prize money goes to astronomical proportions. And in spite of the knowledge that your chance of winning is infinitesimal immediately start dreaming about what you will do with your winnings. and feel a bit let down or deflated when you do not?
