Are dreams things that happen during parodoxical sleep or are they made up of something?

Dreams are the essence of thought, guided by the perceptions of the senses, yet temporarily adrift.
We are such stuff
As dreams are made on, and our little life
Is rounded with a sleep.
-- Prospero, The Tempest, Act IV, Scene I
To die,--to sleep,--
No more; and by a sleep to say we end
The heartache, and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to,--'tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish'd. To die,--to sleep;--
To sleep! perchance to dream:--ay, there's the rub;
For in that sleep of death what dreams may come,
When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,
Must give us pause: there's the respect
That makes calamity of so long life . . .
-- Hamlet, in Hamlet, Act III, Scene I
Dreams are a core dump.
Rap
dreams are interesting little stories I make up as I go along.
seriously...
I do quite a bit of think about what I dream, and why.
I've been able to identify several themes in my dreams, that correspond to what I'm going through emotionally at the time.
Sometimes, I'll have a certain type of dream and hadn't even realized there was something going on in me. Then I'll think....well no wonder I'm dreaming that again.
It can either be an early warning system to me or a sign of contentment, happiness, etc.
Sometimes dreams are put on paper and become sacred.
