Do you need to find speakers specifically designed to be rear l/r surround sound speakers (i.e. the transmitter is designed to "connect" with the l/r surround sound ouputs) to use wireless speakers with a home theatre receiver that is packaged with wired speakers? or will the "regular" transmitter/wireless speaker combo work to substitute?

You don't need to find any special surround sound wireless speakers. The wired speakers aren't anything special of themselves. The surround sound decoding is done by the receiver and any speaker, whether wired or wireless, is going to produce whatever sound the receiver sends to it.
