Dog Arthritic

My Chow is 9 years old and is getting stiff in the old limbs. It has been suggested a number of times that Glucosamine is the "miracle cure", so I have recently started the old beast on a regime.

The question is, has anyone here used it and confirmed it actually works, less the placebo and anthropomorphic stuff?

Cheers,
Chum

Yes, it works. I've had a number of large breed dogs with bone problems and noticed very good results by adding glucosamine to their diets. I now buy Nutra brand dog food for large breeds and it contains glucosamine. It's not a miracle cure, but you should see results in how the dog gets up from a lying postion rather quickly. It also slows down the rate of deterioration.

Much thanks,

I feed her Nutra Nuggets Lamb & Rice from Costco (Kirkland). Fed her this stuff all her life. It says it is supplemented with glucosamine and chondroitin. Sounds like this might be similar to the food you use?

Our dog is twelve and still pretty lively, but slowing down a little. My dad (she lives with him) says he's certain he can see a difference in her ease of movement since he's started a glucosamine regimen. He's so observant when it comes to that little doggie, I'm sure he's right!

Works for me. Don't have a dog for an objective viewpoint.

it does work, especially used in conjunction with MSM and chondritin.

I started giving to my late kuvasz Kodi over two years ago and it helped her immensely with her bad back and leg joints. now all my dogs take 1,500 milligrams a day (1-2 tablespoons) of the mixture.

if possible use the liquid form and the hydrochoride salt (not the sulfate salt) of the glucosamine. the best I have used is called "Syn-Flex." you can find it on the Net. the liquid hydrochloride salt form seems to be absorbed by the body at a much greater level than the solid (or sulfate salt) form.

you should see positive results within a month.

I agree glucosamine seems to help. I have a couple older dogs, and I've found also a little aspirin helps. I give the pup about a quarter tablet per 50 pounds of body weight every other day; the results are almost immediate, and I've noticed no ill effects; one pup was on that regime over 5 years, passing away peacefully at the very-old-for-a-mastiff-breed age of 14.

MSM is short for methylsulphonylmethane. It is used as a supplement with animals and humans and helps reduce inflammation in the joints.

Not really - just store-brand aspirin, generally crushed and embedded within some favorite treat, such as plain bread or peanut butter or cheese or even something like liver sausage ... anything to trick the pup into thinking swallowing the stuff is its idea Laughing

I have two dogs, one has hip problems and the other arthritis. I've been putting Knox Complete in their food for about one year. I've seen terrific improvement in the dog with the hip problems, but not the arthritic one. I've started adding an aspirin to each feeding and that seems to help.

Just an FYI to everyone....

Don't give your dog Ibuprofin or Acetaminophen...both are toxic to dogs. Keep it to aspirin.

Very Happy
