Resounding silence from La Intellectuelle.
So how about you setting the scene Mrs. Eloquence?
Throwing open a discussion on medical ethics, and assisted suicide, then.
Unhappily the authorities here are dead set against euthanasia, which is legal in Holland. A friend of ours had incurable cancer and it was his wish that in the presence of his family and the two required doctor's he was given a fatal injection. His wife described it to us as very dignified and was pleased her husband didn't suffer. I am all for euthanasia in cases where there is absolutely no hope of recovery and quality of life has all but gone.
Vitamins should be taken on a daily basis to promote good health.
Wise words from Dutchy but I completely disagree with Miller's thesis; a good diet doesn't need supplements unless you are pregnant, nursing, or possibly very old; they do more harm than good.
You talk about medical ethics, I don't believe they exist anymore in my State. I have always understood a Doctors calling is to help the sick. No longer so here, greed (money) has taken over! The whole medical profession has resigned from our public Hospitals en masse after their demand of a $100.000 pay rise was refused by the Government. They are already earning $300.000 per annum! Compare that to a pensioner couple that has to exist on $21.000 per annum. Unless a compromise is found by the end of next week the sick will just die as there is no one to treat or operate on them.
xtremely sorry to interrupt..but did our cosmic eagle miss "x"??
Zealous guardian of Life, me, whatever the situation - any deliberate ending of life is abhorrent to me but I can see the other point of view, it's just not one I share.
A frank opinion I appreciate and respect. Don't be sorry for interrupting verbivore, the Eagle did ineed make a slip up, you're very observant.
Basic medical ethics and euthanasia is the topic, is it? I, for one have never been a proponent of legislating morality, i.e. Roe v. Wade. As for euthanasia, I am personally against it, but have not been in the situation of having to deal with it myself, and so I can't say for certain what I would do when faced with a decision like that. Ethics is another topic entirely, but I've written enough for now!
Changing one's attitudes in the light of emotions in personal situations is not really a good thing in my view, eg being opposed to the death penalty until a family member is murdered. Better to make up your mind on issues and apply your views rationally when personal situations arise, don't you think? "Hard cases make bad law" as the legal saying goes.
Decidedly, it goes without saying that you have a very good point, wv. I know what I would do in my own situation. I just have a hard time with the law telling me what to do in that situation that's all. Isn't this topic is quite a slippery slope!
Have to agree with you Dev, much to slippery to continue, everyone has their own opinion, a male probably differs to a female on issues like this. Lets bury the topic and start something new.
I think that just might be a good idea! What do we have to talk about now?!
Just a suggestion - a highlight of my life so far. (And will those who need to please revise the alphabet!)
Ever the watchful eye is W/V, thank you for the polite reminder, I'm ever so sorry for my indiscretion.
Getting my first book published, getting married, having babies, all very good highlights.
Having sparked my interest, how about sending me an autographed copy Clary, I will re-imburse you for the costs.
